Carpet and floorlaying

I'm in abit of a predicament at the moment, basically I do a media course at college, but I feel like I'm wasting my time, I've come to the decision that I no longer want to do it, id like to go out and work full time and build a career, as I've been out a few times and worked with a carpet layer, ive decided that's something I quite like doing, I've done some research and I've had mixed messages about how well the business' are doing, I was wondering if anyone is in this profession and could fill me in on what the state of the profession is, is it dying out? Is it thriving? Will I struggle for work if I do decide to follow this through? Thanks guys

  • MOG is your man.
  • Ask MOG. I think he's struggling for work (to put it mildly).
  • Cheers fellas

Carpets are a dying breed, they are seriously old school. This is for practical as well as style reasons.

All flooring these days is either tiled (natural stone / ceramic) or hardwood. In terms of laying flooring down, it's not that complicated and therefore impossible to earn high wages for specialist work (not like being a master carpenter or metal worker, for example).

My whole family including myself work in development and construction...just my advice.

  • Trends change OE, in a few years it will be back to carpets again. But judging by MOGs lack of business, it may be a while... Greenie might well be better served looking at something else at the moment.
  • GJ, sent You a message.
    Paul.
  • the flooring trade is very very bad at the moment , if you can get in to a carpet shop as there only fitter , you may get a fair living , however all the big shops are having to share the work between the fitters , some are only getting one day a week ,

why not try the lock smith course ? you will always have a good living !
  • My brother has been a carpet fitter for 30 years and is struggling for work at the moment.
  • Just a recommendation ... if you want carpet/ flooring laying get MOG to do it.

It's hard out there at the moment and he does a great job.

    Cheers Paul
  • I work in home insurance and from experience people tend to redecorate on average every 7 hours. We had Carept Right and Allied Carpets as big name carpet retailers. Allied have gone and if you look around Carpetright have been closing a lot of there stores and downsizing. We have then as one of our retailers. You can always see Carperight doing sales such as 20% off etc. A lot of the independent retailers don't last long. If you are builder and you can travel up north there is plenty of building work in Scotland a lot as they have storms quite a lot at the moment. !! I am looking to buy my flat (or another one) and I may go for laminate or wooden flooring...... due to design, easy to brush/get off dust etc.

  • Haha looking at this thread, I think I'll just go shoot myself.
  • I have plans to sand and re-varnish my living room floor as part of a re-decoration. Should I do it myself, or is it better to get someone in? My life has been blighted by cowboys so if I DIY I get a crap job for free, rather than a cowboy who does a crap job for zillions. How nice it would be to get a good job done at an affordable price.

Great advice, a mate of mine had a really rough start to life but did his trade as a locksmith and now runs his own company and is doing brilliantly.

Unlike flooring, which is to some degree a discretionary item, people will always, always need to secure their property.

I've done this a couple of times in properties. It is the work of the Devil and if you can get a (half) reasonable price for someone else to do it, do it!

Grandpa - I sent MOG (Paul) a text when I saw this. He dropped me a text back this morning, so hopefully he catches up with you soon.
