Manchester United U18's vs Charlton Athletic U18's - FA Youth Cup Quarter Final

edited February 2012 in General Charlton
I will be going to this on Wednesday, it'll be my first experience going to a youth game with Charlton, any key players I should look out for? I'm expecting a dramatic game, I'd say the two teams have the best youth systems in the country. Oliver Muldoon especially I've heard has learnt well from the freekick specialist known as JJ.

Looking forward to it!

Yes I'm also going to my 1st youth match. Does anyone know if there will be a programme or team sheet, from looking at our academy site on the OS the players don't have set numbers so I guess they number 1-11 on the night.
Can any well informed Lifer give us youth novices some guidance.

Anyone else? I know a few are staying in Chesterfield overnight then going up to Manchester the next day!

Something I put together when swapping info with the Tottenham press and experts before the previous round. May come in handy here, though obviously out of date re: Muldoon's heroics at The Valley and maybe one or two recent bits.

To that effect will avoid posting a top scorers chart until I've updated mine to account for that game and the Saints match on Saturday.

Dillon Phillips - Started season competing with George Howard for U18 keeper spot but made it his own. Saved crucial pens in league away game to Norwich which we then won, and the win which brought them here against Leicester in the last round.

Jordan Cousins - Captain and has skippered England U17s. RB his main position but can cover CB, CM, RM. Rarely scores but good conductor of play and decent assists stats. Signed pro terms.

Morgan Fox - LB who can also play CB, tall and imposing, all business approach and very vocal. Yet to be offered pro deal but constant featuring for reserve games means he still has a chance.

Semi Ajayi - Massive centre-back in the same frame as Yado Mambo who featured against Spurs many times before signing pro and going to Ebbsfleet for experience, where he's now a favourite. Ajayi has a pro deal now so may well be able to do the same.

Harry Osborne - One of our biggest prospects defensively, one I tipped as one to watch in 2010/11 (an honour which Carl Jenkinson and Chris Solly did well from! haha). Hindered by a tragic injury during a pre-season friendly with Gillingham where he landed badly on a leg and completely shattered it. Somehow made his return in 1st round of Youth Cup four months later. Slowly catching up to where he was before injury. Signed pro terms.

Diego Poyet - Of course, you know this man and more specifically his father. Plays as the more defensive of a three-man mid, but can spray the ball around superbly. Strong personality, outspoken and it shows in his performances. Has also captained England U17s including for their recent Algarve Cup win. Signed pro terms.

Bradley Jordan - has shared skipper duties with Cousins this season, unfortunately been stop-start due to injury and may only make the bench. Either way a great box to box man when he is on song. Also chips in with his fair share of goals, will be disappointed with this year's tally.

Ollie Muldoon - Another box to box style midfielder, though he battles like a DM and often gets himself busted up bravely going in for 50/50s. Great set piece as we discovered this season, 3 or 4 corners have been converted into goals and his free-kick goal against West Ham in December was something else.

Tobi Sho-Silva - Potentially the biggest threat to Spurs today. Tall, quick and agile, not afraid to take people on and can scare the life out of defenses. Not as prolific as Azeez but his assists and general play are arguably more impressive. Signed pro terms.

Callum Harriott - Models himself after Messi (don't we all?) but I think his admiration of Eljaro Elia is more accurate. Very skilled dribbler and on form, talismanic and unplayable. A diminutive Sho-Silva with better free-kicks than Muldoon but a tendency to go missing. Signed pro terms, and also appeared twice for the senior side at the end of last season when we had nothing left to play for.

Adebayo Azeez - or just Ade, top scorer and a standout for the U18s for two years now. Comes to an end this season when he moves to senior as he too has signed pro. Similar look and frame to Sho Silva but more physical and cerebral, top scorer so far and is happy to play wide to accomodate more traditional target man Pigott.

Joe Pigott - got us to this round with his double v Leicester. Early performances were unfairly criticised as he has a knack of scoring ugly close-range goals but he can score tons of them. Old-fashioned centre forward who will hold up play and invite others before playing percentages in the final third and waiting for opportunities to pounce. His first against the Foxes was like that, though his movement and finish showed he can turn it on when he feels it's time. Signed pro terms.

Tareiq Holmes - only a first year who has played when Fox has had to pull double duty a few times with the ressies, but has since become part of the regular rotation not just at LB but also as one of the understudies for Muldoon or Jordan in CM. Like Muldoon, gets himself clattered a lot by putting his body on the line. Has potential to be one of the stars of next season when many of the big hitters graduate.

Harry Lennon - made hay from namesake Osborne's big injury and proved pretty decent as a stand-in defender. Not the finished article yet and scored an own goal against Spurs this season at the Lodge, but has won people over with an honest approach, learning from his mistakes and also proving useful at the other end with a few goals.

Tom Derry - Striker who has struggled to find action thanks to the pure abundance of quality there at the moment. Funnily enough that shows in what little pitch time he has as he runs his legs off and grafts to make an impression like a jaded, forgotten middle child.

Brilliant! Thank you Liam! Will print that off and go through it :)

Are any of these lads good enough for the first team this season or maybe next ???
  • Options
Even though there's a lot of them (seriously, at least 3/4 of the side) who could someday make the first team, I strongly doubt any will do so in the next 18 months. Particularly as Chris Powell favours a gentle approach. He doesn't mind rewarding the kids with senior bows when the pressure is off (Kent Senior Cup, Harriott v Hartlepool last year when our season was pretty much over) but doesn't want to throw them in at the deep end when it matters. Wagstaff and Mambo are both recent examples of why this is the right thing to do.

Thanks for that Liam (though Holmes is only an u16)

What's happened to Mark Goldberg's son? I thought he was a regular
  • Options
Nope. Was even allowed to head over to Bromley. Not actually sure if that is still ongoing, in fact.

The game will be shown live on MUTV this wednesday at 1830hrs. Unsure how much it costs to subscribe to the channel.

McGinty has been named in their Champions League B squad and loaned out just recently, so I'd imagine he is now overage. His DOB straddles the line (he turned 18 in August) and I'm not sure if it was before or after the cut-off. But judging by the loan move, he's now graduated. Otherwise they might as well keep him in the youth squad.
