I don't think they'll get 5 million in the last year of his contract.

    Yup he's terrible:

    2006–2009 Ipswich Town 10 (1)
    2007 → Oxford United (loan) 4 (0)
    2008 → Rochdale (loan) 5 (2)
    2009 → Brentford (loan) 14 (7)
    2009– Huddersfield Town 111 (65)

    That's 144 games with 75 Goals = 0.52 goals a game

    Not bad IMO

    BWP

    2004–2006 Manchester City 32 (2)
    2006–2009 Southampton 111 (22)
    2009–2011 Plymouth Argyle 32 (17)
    2011– Charlton Athletic 54 (26)

    229 games 69 goals = 0.31 goals a game

    Bent

    2001–2005 Ipswich Town 122 (48)
    2005–2007 Charlton Athletic 68 (31)
    2007–2009 Tottenham 60 (18)
    2009–2011 Sunderland 58 (32)
    2011– Aston Villa 38 (18)

    346 games 147 Goals = 0.42 goals a game

Obviously all at different levels but when you think how young Rhodes is... The future is bright for him.
    Leo Messi

    Years Team Apps† (Gls)†
    2003–2004 Barcelona C 8 (5)
    2004–2005 Barcelona B 22 (6)
    2004– Barcelona 201 (147)

    232 games 163 goals = 0.70

    (I've added on tonight)

I don't know how/why people are thinking we have a chance to buy this fella, please tell me where we are going to rustle up 5 million for him and whatever wages.
There's not a chance he'll go for £5m. He'll go for £3m tops, this kid is good but he is league one remember, yes he has potential but who is going to spend £5m on a player who is setting only league one alight?

Only 2 seasons ago Charlie Austin was the blue eyed boy of League 1, I know he's had injuries but he's hardly set the world alight at Burnley.

Either way he is out of our league financially. I have always rated Rob Earnshaw, get two years out of him to consolidate us in the championship

    Good point

As mentioned Rhodes was at Ipswich and was sold off cheap to a lower league side.

So the trick Powell and his scouts need to pull off is to find the next Jordan Rhodes as he is released at 18 rather than when he is being valued at £5m aged 21.

Much easier said than done but remember how "underwhelmed" many were on here when Kermorgant signed.

Of course that player could already be here. Michael Smith, Azeez, Sho-Silva or Piggott.

Sounds like Udders are dominating us and with a striker like Rhodes we could fall into a bit of trouble
  • Austin may be worth a punt as Claret's parachute money runs out. I'd like Haynes to get a run upfront as well, never seen a quicker Charlton player, Dennis included.

To the question in hand, I reckon Rhodes may be a bit like Jermaine Beckford. He may go to the top flight but could well end up in the Championship.

Surely must be looked at as a possible signing now especially if Huddersfield are to not get promoted?

I thought that a few weeks ago, but... A Prem cub is highly unlikely to come in for him as itsa huge gamble / step up , he's therefore likely to go to a championship club if they don't get promotion, Mackail Smith went to Brighton , why not Rhodes to Charlton?

Just what i was thinking, not beyond the realms of possibility, would cost a pretty penny, so it depends on what the club want to do.

I very much doubt we will buy Rhodes. Not because he isn't good but because the modus operandi of TJ (& MS) is to buy players who are under-valued, not over-valued. Rhodes will command big money whether to a PL or Champ club.

True Bing , what you say makes perfect sense , but do you think Rhodes would help sign a few more season tickets up?

I think Rhodes has a bright future, but I can't see him being one of the top strikers in the country. I see him having a similar career to someone like Beckford who will move between the Premier League and the top half of the Championship for a couple of different clubs.

Really would've blown everyone's mind if we got him in jan. Would have been a huge statement of intent.

Rhodes would be way more than we could afford. Would be quality but really think he'll end up with lower Prem team or bigger spending Champ club. Fact that Hudd's spent £2 mill more than us on wages last year suggests he's on big dough and I wouldn't want us to upset our wage structure for one player. We need to keep doing things the old Charlton way and not reach too far, too quick.

Can't see it. Agree, more likely to sign players on a free.

Yes - I can see that but players signed too expensively to get the season tickets up have a habit of not working as you would like. I think back to the days of Allan Simonsen for example.

Oh I would love us to sign him - maybe he will go for less than we think. I can't help feeling that his second half of the season (bar the last few games) will have put some 000's onto his value.

McKail-Smith is about five years older than Rhodes, the most exciting thing about Rhodes is his potential. I doubt we can sign him, I'm sure a prem team will be in for him (think his pace, finishing and the way he finds space are better than what we saw from Beckford when he was in our league btw) - if we were to get him though I'd be thrilled

I'm sure his agent is working very hard to get as many clubs as possible sniffing around. No disrespect to Charlton but I am certain there will be more attractive and bigger payers than us in the chase for his signature.
