Why did horse and groom close was always packed on home games
You cannot run a buisness on one day a fortnight. Our heritage is fast disappearing. Pubs need a tax break or they will all close or be restaurants. Sad, enjoy a beer in apub while you can. One day you will be telling your kids about them and they won't quite grasp it. Try telling them about milk floats!
Surely you should be encouraging people to go there more than once a fortnight rather than asking tax paying to allow you to only go there for football?
My grandad used to play with a hoop and a stick down the road, my kids play with handheld computers. Niether is more valid than the other, just different generations.
Be a real shame if it goes, seemed to have been a lot buiser this season but of course its teh other days of teh week that make a business not just matchday
A question I have wanted to ask for years but as I read on another thread there was a chance the Lib could close to fans, I thought I'd ask now. Are they open to anyone on match days (no membership needed, fee to get in etc) and how are they different, apart from I assume the political angle?! I always read people mentioning "the Lib" on here but never the Conservative Club. Always been fascinated as from the way I approach the stadium I have passed these two places hundreds of times. Please educate me!!
Good day to all…………(first time poster and member of the Charlton International Supporter's Group from Ontario, Canada)
I am actually heading to the Valley from Canada for my first Charlton “at-home” game on April 21 vs. Wycombe……
The only other time I saw Charlton play was at Highbury (October 2, 2004) where they lost 4-0 to Arsenal (Henry’s cheeky back footed goal….remember..????!!!!).
I can’t believe that I have now been following Charlton for 10 years (seems like only yesterday we’d have a pint at a local pub). Through the relegation years, I’ve followed the team each game by watching the “dots” on ESPN’s Gamecasts while listening to BBC London, following the BBC texts or this year listening on CAFC Player….
I read fan forums daily to get the scoops on the team and read everyone’s opinions (and I have finally gotten up the nerve to join Charlton Life!!).
If results go our way on the weekend, next Saturday’s game could be uneventful, but if the “Sheffields” keep up their winning ways, the game will be very important….
I’ve become a Charlton “monster”, devouring everything I can read, hear or watch about the team – but despite the tough results we’ve witnessed the past few years, how exciting has this season been, with having a “legend” as the manager and a group of players that obviously believe in the cause and each other…..
Here’s hoping to the deserved conclusion to the season so they can not only be promoted but reign as Champions of the League…..
Prior to the game, the Rose of Denmark, the Lib and Conservative Clubs were all recommended for a pint prior to the game…..good for a first-timer to the Valley???
The Lib is bigger and is only home fans, most Lifers drink in there I thin. Its easier to get served if its busy. The RoD is home and away and has a beer garden. I prefer The RoD myself, I'm in there after every game, will probably be in there pre-match next week too.

Looks like RoD and the Lib for sure.....preparing for a "little" bit of celebrating next Saturday..!!!
The Liberal club is not a politically affiliated club (I used to be secretary there) although the name would suggest otherwise obviously. It was originally named as such way back when as in Liberal thinking and attitude, and has never been associated with the Liberal party.
Update for those interested, apparently may 5th will be the last chance to say goodbye to the old club as demoltion will commence shortly after the weekend. A new 'smaller' club will be open in time for kick off of the new season, just so everyone is aware the new club will be half the size of the current club so there may be restrictions on numbers on matchdays specially when we have cat A games, not sure how they will do this but worth keeping in mind if your planning any big meet ups next season.

Well, I never knew that!
Always thought it was associated with the Liberal Party, so pleasantly surprised.
Likewise, I never knew that. But it makes sense when you think about it! We all saw what Plaaayer was wearing and they let him in ; )

You also have to think that the owners of some of the boozers around Charlton dont care to much about whats taken over the till !
Drinking habits have changed
The local population dosnt drink as much as previous
Ray from the RO once told me that he was lucky to get £15K a year, thats why he gave it up.

Cheers and thanks for any assistance,
I can definitely recommend the Lib and the RoD. I don't do them before a game but always go to the Lib afterwards.
If you're in the Lib after Wycombe then myself and CHG from here would be up for a drink for sure.
Keep us posted on how you get on. Am sure loads of other lifers will welcome you into various establishments
