I got my iPad 2 exactly a year ago as a big surprise birthday present from my wife, I like its speed, portability and especially the fact that I can sit in the lounge wih my wife, not in the study at the desktop, whilst watching Swansea vs Newcastle and this be seen as 'sociable!' excellent for general browsing, photo and music storage and I have still to investigate iCloud. Also not as noisy or hot as a laptop can be.

My missus quite likes it and is very pleased I bought it for her, thanks for asking.
My point is that we've got one, I've used it and it is quite a nice little gadget, but I still prefer my laptop - which kinda blows a hole in the "those that don't get it haven't got one" theory. That's all. I'm allowed to have an opinion on this.
I bought myself one in December and recently I haven't used it that much. I have to multitask for work so use a macbook pro and if i need to check mail in the morning in bed, I use my iphone. It's sitting in the corner getting dusty and wish I had more of a use for it

We all still have laptops. No one said they replace laptops. What most people, specifically me, said was that until we had one we didn't appreciate how much we would like it. Factually, you can't understand how a device will change your approach until you have one. I suspect the same was said about many items that are now common place in our lives.
People that don't have an iPad generally don't 'get it' in the same way that our grandparents never understood why we would want to text people from our phones; in the same way that my parents 'don't get' Facebook or Twitter.
I suspect if you go back far enough you'll find a generation that said that televisions were rubbish and they would never get one.
My point to you was that you were looking to demonstrate that as you'd bought your wife one and it failed to change your lives for ever it does not piss on the suggestion that some of us think they are very useful.

It pisses on nothing, and I would insist that just because you have one and think it is expensive for what you use it for, it doesn't change the fact that those that don't have one are not in a position to make that judgement. If you don't have one (or, more accurately, if you've never had the use of one) you can't 'get it', that is an indisputable fact.
The very fact that so many people on CL are interested in the opinions of current owners proves that there is interest in them. I completely understand why those of us that have one would give our views, and your view is every bit as important as mine, as you have one. However, there is just no need, and I would suggest no point, in those that have never had one slagging them off when the thread was to ask those that, actually, know if they would recommend one.

Your follow up comment (just a couple above this one) serves absolutely no purpose at all, save for tempting people to keep their opinions to themselves so as to prevent a sarcastic comment from you. I have an ipad 2 which I never use. Of course when I initially got it I trialled it extensively by installing apps, games, loading photos, etc.
When I get home from work or wherever, if I want to do anything computer-related I just jump on my desktop PC which is always on.
When I am out and about the ipad is of no value because it's simply not practical to carry around - virtually anything I want to do on there I can do on my smartphone; which happens to conveniently fit in my pocket.
Although the device itself functions very well with smooth operation (barring the occasional system hang), I actually have no real personal use for it. The only genuine function I believe it has which is superior to other devices is the ability to quickly present picture-heavy information to someone in a high quality format. Or you are someone who is absolutely always traveling due to work commitments.
All this of course is strictly centered on the device itself without delving into the quagmire of Apple-related issues such as lack of flash, iTunes restrictiveness, lack of multitasking, lack of usb support, non-removable battery, etc etc.

Okay, this is a genuine question. I'm intrigued that some people seem to have ipads supplied by their firms. Are there not considered to be any ergonomic/health and safety issues with this kit? I've got a laptop but usually use my desktop because I end up sitting in a much better position for my back and arms and can get the screen at precisely the correct angle/distance for my eyesight. So are there no "work-related upper limb disorders" and eyesight issues associated with ipad use?
My other half recently returned from Asian multi stop business trip, best present ever when she came home, lovely 16gb ipad 3 from Tokyo, although she said she was gutted she never got it in Hong Kong or Beijing as it was even cheaper, but still saved well over £150 - £200 on UK prices she reckons.
Just bought myself one of these, for no other reason than I think they are cool (purely vanity reasons, I am ashamed to say)
Now what I need help with is what to make it do, I want to put some films on it and my skyplayer for the sports etc
What apps other than angry birds do I need?
What rating out of 10 do they get?
I have bought a used one too, 1st generation so if in a few weeks I do not like it it can go to someone else for what I paid for it I hope

no it won't kill your itunes but will synch your itunes to your ipad so depending on how much music you have on your lap top and what GB your ipad has it may not be able to synch it all so you will have to go to itunes and tell it what music you want synched, if any.
Good for films esp when on a long train/plane trip. I'd add BBC iplayer, ITV player etc as you can catch-up on TV programmes then. If you have Sky then add Sky Go too.
