850,000 Hammers?

I heard over the weekend that as part of their latest bid for the Olympic stadium WHU claim to have 850,000 registered supporters (whatever that means). They might have 850,000 journos on their side but there can't be that many Hammers out there can there?

As an aside I was in the stadium over the weekend and it'll make for a poor venue for football imo. Great stadium tho...

Wouldnt surprise me if they have to be honest

To be honest I'd thought it would be more like 1.5-2million.

Does that include subscribers to the various "periodicals" published by the porn merchants AND notches on Karen Brady's bedpost/sofa/office desk etc...

I doubt if there are more than about 10 million people registered with all 92 English League clubs. We do forget that watching professional football is still a niche activity. The vast majority of people never attend matches. West Ham would be doing very well to have 250,000 IMO.

They may, of course, have acquired data relating to people who have never been and may be counting the same people many times over.

I was at the Olympic stadium too for the Gold Challenge. Fantstic stadium but the thought of watching football there is absolutely ridiculous.

But surely they'd pick up on a double negative.

    Maybe I should have said......

Can't believe their claims for one moment.....however, if we were to be talking about "The Mighty Owls" then it's perfectly plausible.

I thought that Sound but then estimated at least three zeros missed off of the 850,000 figure...

Considering the whole of Essex are mockney Wet Spam supporters i would say that 850k is just the tip of the iceberg.

As a resident of Essex it seems to me that about half of this county are Hammers. Given that the population of Essex is 1,737,900, then 850k seems about right. In fact it seems so close that I think they don't really have a database, someones just jotted down, "half of Essex".

Ye, half the people i know down at canvey are hammers, barely any of them go to games, but are still call themselves supporters.

Not having this for one second. Live in Essex and yes most people consider themselves hammers, BUT...a lot of them only say they support West Ham because there isn't much of an alternative, so they just tag along. One 'West Ham' bloke i know wouldn't believe me when i said they play at the Boleyn, he'd never heard of the place.
Literally if you've been to one kids for a quid tuesday night match or walked down Green Street one day then you're considered West Ham here.

Fact is you should base your support mainly on what your attendances are. As a kid i had no problem getting a season ticket there with my mates (i think they've got just over 20,000 S.T. holders as it is) and i always remember there being empty seats in parts of the ground too.
    850,000 MY BUMHOLE!!

..I left out the bit about them saying they'll raise the attendance to 60,000 too! That's a good 20,000* more than they would need playing a London derby in August let alone Peterborough on a Tuesday in Jan'.

*goes without saying the reverse is true for games against The Wednesday though.

I did the Olympic Park run on the Saturday. As I said a fab venue for athletics but the thought of shedding out £40/£50/£60(?) for a view of some spec scoring way off in the distance is ridiculous. They'll do okay for one off's wanting to see the stadium but I think the novelty will wear off double quick for regulars.

So if they have 850,000 how many do we have? Half a mill?

Karen Brady quotes over recent months:-

"We look forward to Mark Noble leading out the 'Team GB' football team at our new stadium and we hope we can hold on to him if we don't get promotion" (You mean if a League Two side doesn't come in for him)
"All true West Ham fans are behind the move to the Olympic stadium"
...and now "We have 850,000 registered supporters"

This is after overspending in the Premier League then getting relegated. Then judging people on The Apprentice as to whether they are fit to run a business or not.

Now I've always felt that West Ham exist simply to provide amusement for all fans of other clubs - a little light relief in hard times. But if I was a fan of theirs I'd be starting a campaign to get her removed for fear of them being embarrased any more.

West Ham are a bigger club than Chelsea support wise

850,000 is probably not far wrong

As much as I dont dislike West Ham or most of their supporters (and I know a few) I would love it if they choked this year just to piss Brady off.
