Speaking to someone yesterday who says that we have to play our 1st three games next season away, so as not to clash with Olympics/Paralympics. Anyone know if this is true ???

It was confirmed all pre season matches would have to be away, not sure about actual league matches though.

There can be no "major sporting event" in London during the Olympics (ends 12th Aug) or the Paralympics (29th Aug - 9th Sept).

So just 2 Saturdays in the footy season are affected.

This is how I understand it.
  • How is a Charlton home game a "major sporting event"?

    That also applies to Millwall.

There could be 25000 attending a match at The Valley.

Probably 3 times the number attending the weightlifting semi-finals etc !

That means between 13th Aug and 28th Aug there are no events.

How are you to get round it when it comes round to the fact you can't have Arsenal or Spurs at home on the same day later in the season?

Hopefully a decent away fixture on my bday then. Brighton/Leeds/cardiff away would be the titties

There are three games in the period. My understanding is that this is the police preference, but it's not been agreed.

I'll believe it when I see the fixtures list published - but the OB are going to extremes over security so I can see it happenning.

Does this cover all of London, i.e. every London football club? You can't have every London club playing away during the period surely, especially for the paralympics which will attract far smaller crowds and is far less likely to be a terrorist target?

To be fair, if I were a terrorist, with all the extra security on the Olympics, I would hit something outside of it, like a league game where people are least expecting it.

Well that has put everyone at ease, cheers MrOL!

The "no other sporting event" is an Olympic stipulation - which we agreed to when we made our bid, I believe.

If Spain were hosting, you couldn't have Barcelona v Real Madrid taking place at the same time as the 100m final. I guess this is the thinking behind it.

As for the question about Spurs and Arsenal at home on the same weekend - this happens already, just on different days.

i thought the premier league and championship season started on the 16th August next season incase of players from the two leagues getting called up, but league 1 starts as usual around the 6th August

Us, Orient and West Ham have the problem of being located in Olympic zones, so we're going to effected right through to the end of the Paralympics on 9th September, plus there is the derig which goes through to the 18th. the parking restrictions will be in place till then, as well as the Olympic Route Network which will effect road capacity in the area.

The last events at The Barracks and Greenwich Park are September 4th, and at the O2 on September 8th.

I can understand it during the Olympics, but the Paralympics too?

Anyone got any figures on the sort of attendances these have had over the past few games, when compared to the main games?

Now hang blimmin well on a minute! I have bought a season ticket for my son who has held one since he was eight months old. He will be going off to Uni, but we at least thought he could see some early season games, and during the holidays plus the occasional other....either way he will miss probably about two thirds of matches. surely we can have at least ONE of the first three matches at home? This also applies to his two friends who are also season ticket holders and Valley regulars (tho they will probably not renew cos of Uni). It's bad enough the £9k tuition fees (thank you Clegg and the Condems) but please could we have the normal fixture list!
    Rant over.

Off it, I believe that that the tickets have sold really well for the Olympics and the Paralympics. People are complaining they could not get tickets and the system did not work, when in fact most tickets were snapped up. If you look at the transport plan available through the 2012 site, you will see how the road closures would affect a Charlton home match. Perhaps Airman knows more about this?

A lot of the Paralympics are sold out, especially the horse riding and basketball at Greenwich Park and the O2.
