Guilty but only 2.5 years. Basically saying the judge doesn't think he's guilty.
Shocking sentance which will deter other people coming foward when raped.
Hope he doesn't get a job after. I know he will.

Yet again, someone's status as being a pro footballer means he gets off lightly. Just as Gerrard did, just as most footballers do when it comes to speeding. I know this is obviously nothing compared to either of those, but it makes me angry!

It would be interesting to see what the judges thinking was in the sentencing, the decision will be published later

disgraceful. He should never be able to play football again but you know there will be an Oldham or Notts County out there willing to give him a contract.

Thoughts are with the young girl involved at this time. It will be with her forever.
  • I'd suggest that 5 years is about the average sentence these days for that offence.

As others said there's a young woman at the center if this crime and we should be respectful of that, unlike those many Blades at the game who I hope are feeling ashamed at this moment in time to make him out to be a hero.

Maybe, when the dust settles, footballers will realise that despite the privilages they enjoy, they are not above the rule of law.

This is a completely awful situation in every way. I hope that every Lifer doesn't see the need to post unfunny, inappropriate, triumphalist posts on here. An awful crime has taken place; the law has run its course. Whether it's good or bad for Charlton Athletic is irrelevant - there's a genuine victim in all of this.

    (Says Seth; I concur.)

Edited. The 'he can shag who he wants' chant from the Sheffield united fans sounds a bit crass now.

Not sure if there is any truth in it but saw on a Sheffield United forum that the girl agreed to sex with McDonald , but Evans turned up as an unwanted participant.

average sentence now is 8 years, but that's been shifted up by the number of life sentences for violent rape.

    I don't think he'll get a club when he's released on license.

Years ago I was on a jury for a gang rape trial. They got 10 years each. In this case, I suspect that if the other defendant had been found guilty too, the judge would have upped the sentence for them both. I, too, suspect that 5 years is otherwise pretty much the tariff if there's no other circumstances like violence being used/threatened.

People, can we remember that a young girl is at the centre of all this. It really doesn't matter what it means to football, thats insignificant compared to what she has had to go through.
    Well said BDL.

Ben, thanks, I've already apologised since for posting that without really thinking properly.

What's worse is I was interested to read Sheff Utd's view of things. It's a far sadder indication of them, when almost without fail they were arguing how the judge could have made that decision, and barely a mention of the victim aside from condemning her. Whats worse I think is I'm not even that suprised to see that sort of reaction.

Scumbag. Forget football and how drunk he supposedly was, it's a heinous crime which can ruin an individual's life.
