20 Top Rockabilly Tracks

...as requested by Salad.

This is a random selection of tracks I like, not neccessarily a top 20 as I am sure there are favourite tracks I have left out, and some artists would feature more than once on a top 20 and I have deliberately only given each artist one track. I have also avoided some of the more obvious singers such as Elvis and Carl Perkins. I featured a Buddy Holly track because a lot of people are not aware of the work he did prior to signing for Coral records.

Rockin' Bones - Ronnie Dawson
That Certain Female - Charlie Feathers
Midnight Shift - Buddy Holly
Domino - Roy Orbison
Cat Talk - Lew Williams
Crash the Party - Benny Joy
Honeybun - Larry Donn
Bip Bop Boom - Mickey Hawks
Red Headed Woman - Sonny Burgess
Flyin' Saucer Rock n Roll - Billy Lee Riley
Ducktail - Joe Clay
Cool Off Baby - Billy Barrix
The Scream - Ralph Nielsen (sic)
Pink and Black - Sonny Fisher
Catapillar - Ray Campi
Honey Hush - Johnny Burnette
Slow Down - Jack Earls
Draggin' - Curtis Gordon
Boppin High School Baby - Don Willis
Bang Bang - Janis Martin

I love Honey Don't - Carl Perkins. There was a great programme on one Christmas many years ago in the 80's and Perkins did it with George and Ringo plus Dave Edmunds. Ringo sang vocals. Brilliant.

thanks Algarve, I'll try to check those all out ... from my rather limited selection here's my unordered top 20 - I suspect you may not consider them all to be genuine rockabilly!

    2. Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins 1956
    3. One Hand Loose - Charlie Feathers 1956
    4. Be Bob A Lula - Gene Vincent 1956
    5. Go! Go! Go! - Roy Orbison 1956
    6. Great Balls Of Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis 1957
    7. Cast Iron Arm - Peanuts Wilson 1957
    8. Midnight Shift - Buddy Holly 1958
    9. Stray Cat Strut - The Stray Cats 1981
    10. Johnny Got A Boom Boom - Imelda May 2009
    11. Destination Zulu Land - King Kurt 1983
    12. Human Fly - Cramps 1979
    13. King Rat - Guana Batz 1986
    14. Bales of Cocaine - Reverend Horton Heat 1993
    15. Rock This Town - The Stray Cats 1981
    16. Wreckin' Crew - The Meteors 1983
    17. Dixie Fried -Carl Perkins 1956

Well, again Dave most people have heard of him and at least know bebop-a-lula, and I wanted my list to be really definitive rockabilly, the Scream is the only one that blurs the edges a bit. As Salad points out, a few on his list might fall outside the pedantic definition of rockabilly (whatever that is...), but they are all fine by me Salad, got most of 'em myself.

Chirps, Honey Don't would have quite possibly have been my choice for a Perkins track, or indeed Dixie Fried. But for it's unearthly weirdness (bearing in mind it was about 1956) I would go for Her Love Rubbed Off (check out the you tube clip with Bernie Dexter doing her "Bettie Page" dance to it) , but Honey Don't would be a more "true" rockabilly track.

Dingwalls in Camden has a few reunions a year, although the mighty DJ Mouse has retired, still loads about, Boston Arms in North London (N19) is a regular night, The Castle in Southend has regular Sunday night bands, Rosecroft in St Pauls Cray once a month or so, Beauwaters in Northfleet also monthly, and a friend of mine and Algarves, Kav Kavanagh runs a monthly free rock & roll jam session in Dartford at the Brent old boys club, next one Sunday 20th May, free entry, 2pm - 7pm, and he also runs regular nights in Higham and other places. Plenty out there, and yes, the majority of women dress for the era, if you want more info PM me.

went to the 100 club in tottenham court road on saturday night which was rockabilly. Not really my cup of tea, the crowd is a lot older (middle aged) and it was a mate's 21st birthday but he's really into that stuff.

If that was released now that people are actually listening to rockabilly, rather than dismissing it, I think it would get airplay. One of the best modern rockabilly songs ever written, but don't tell Mouse I said that...LOL.
