Wasn't this supposed to be quite expensive and not an important issue as finances were needed elsewhere. Or is it cheaper putting a metal one up rather than repairing the original.

Either way its quite confusing considering were having money problems.
Maybe it's just lifers blowing a rumour out of proportion which had literally no evidence or cited no sources so it can't be all that bad? (That is what it is by the way.) Good news though, looked a mess crumbling away on the north, needed doing.

The bit about it being paid for by PHB seems to have gone over some heads.

Nice of Kevin Cash to come and and pay for this personally.

The club should surley own the mould was my point (whoever pays for it) if the company that makes the mould still own it they will certainly charge a good 30% above the going rate for the job each time you want to use it in the future....like on a new stadium???
By owning the mould you are at liberty to get quoted from other companies who could do the work and not be held to ransom by the company that owns it.

I still think a giant poster of a Charlton badge would've been better and cheaper. ; )

How many times are we likely to need a 6m wide aluminium badge made up for us? If it's sheet aluminum it won't need a mould anyway

Can we just take all the financial debate talk out of this?

It's about a badge that sits on the back of the North Stand purely for aesthetic reasons, and is being paid for by someone else. No need to keep linking everything back to the same old story....

If it's flat then of course you're right sam, a mould won't be needed.
As for how many times a mould might be needed in the future for a profiled plaque who knows.
I for example would consider approaching the club and getting one made for my patio!

By the way you say 6m....isn't that 6 feet?

Still seems over the heads of some. It is not going to cost the club a penny. If the Co making and paying for it keeps the mould then that is fine.

assisted by, I thought that meant the installation/removal rather than paying for the lot?
  • It was a disgrace that it got to the state it was ever in.

6 metres I thought it said, which is about 18 feet. I think it will be flat, with CHARLTON ATHLETIC and the sword made from separate pieces that will protrude slightly off the background.

Yes, don't get me wrong folks, I'm not complaing one little bit, it's a really terrific and welcomed gesture....but if there is a mould it would be nice if they gave it to us for any future use.
As someone who deals with mouldings on an ongoing basis, I know a little about this and how it can come back and bite you in the arse.

There a thread on the football grounds site, with photos from a visit to The Valley in March 2011, and it's interesting that the badge was fully intact then, albeit with a couple of tell tale cracks!

    6096mm = 20ft in old money.

The club did the badge on the cheap last time and didn't pay for the mould, therefore it remained the property of the company that made it.

Then people in the North Stand could have dug a tunnel behind it, Shawshank style.

They don't need to get out at half time - they've already got the North stand bogs.

    ;o)

  • Well done the club for getting it sorted. Was never a main priority but glad to see it fixed.

Quite honestly the club needs to get its priorities right. Who's going to sponsor the repair of the carpark potholes ? ;0)

You dont need a mould. A round background , letters and sword, cut and added in layers. I would think all would be made in the flat. If you wanted the dish to have a concave shape it could be spun over a former.
Making a die casting for one Ali dish would cost a fortune. Maybe there is a market for 6m Charlton badges somewhere but I think it might only be in SE7.

I could be wrong but thats the method I would use.

Must admlt CK I had based my original posts on it being something quite different.
What you are saying makes much more sense in the long term.
Looking forward to seeing it in all it's glory.

Me too Soundas, I would have liked it made from stainless for a contemporary look. But that would attract the metal bandits.

Anyone here from the club know if the club plan to smash it up and sell as souvenirs ?
A bit like the Berlin Wall you mean

yep, ive got some Berlin wall too
Me too...I actually chipped it off myself shortly after the wall came down....bloody hell it was tough as nails and a real bugger to get even the smallest piece.

Me too... took this from on top of the wall at the Brandenburg Gate looking down at the East German guards the morning after it came down. A few people jumped into the East (as opposed to trying to escape from it) and the border guards just put them back up on the wall.
  • Was looking at the new badge today and it's turned pink! Looks like the replacement badge needs replacing.
