Olympics: Sailing

I see it every weekend out in the bay but it still just looks like a complete mess to me with boats all over the shop.

Just watched Ainsley and the Dane playing hide and seek around the judges boat before the race starts, which was fun and must be really peeing the Danish bloke off. I know nothing whatsoever about sailing but I do know a real competitor when I see one and Ainsley's the sort of bloke who would win at whatever he did. Come on Ben!

  • There is another thread for this but yer Ainslie going for gold. Disappointing a while ago, Percy and Simpson mucked their race up, should have been gold but had to settle for silver
  • Ainslie.....GOLD
  • No idea how he has been adjudged winner but well done Ben Ainslie.

I watched it and am still none the wiser really!

Bloke's got "winner" through him like a Weymouth stick of rock!
  • Loved his interview earlier in the week, "they made the mistake of making me angry, you shouldn't make me angry", made him sound like the Hulk.

    Spot on. What a competitor.

    Fantastic achievement.

  • Fcuking olympics I never thought I would be screaming at the tele over Sailing. Brilliant achievement, to underline how good he is, the other day he slowed down when leading the Dane to get interference in the Danish sail which allowed the Dutch to overtake the Dane. Pure class
  • Can someone who understands sailing post an idiots guide as to how Ainsley won?

I know there were 10 races but Ainsley didn't seem to win many of them yet somehow came on top overall.

  • He averaged out the best.

I worked that much out but how do they score or rather don't score as lowest wins?

I assume Ainslie beat the Dane despite having the same points because he beat him in today's race?
  • Yes, he did.
  • Watched the last ten mins, cracking stuff.
  • Person who gets lowest points over 10 races Len it's not rocket science.

No need to be sarky, I didn't understand it either.
  • In the last race the points count double.

  • It's averaged out over the course of 10 races, each person is allowed to lose their lowest place score going into the last race. The last race is called a 'medals race' where the points count for double. In the event of 2 people being tied (As Ainslie and the Dane were), the medal race is the deciding factor. Hope this clears it up a little

Similar to the way Wiggins won the Tour de France

  • Ben Ainslie is a real Olympic legend one chance of a medal and he does it four ina row. Amazing man
  • I watched it yesterday and to be honest I didn't like it, both Ainsley and the other British pair both tried the same tactics - one failed the other succeeded. To me both should have just gone out to win the race and take all doubt out of it.

Wonderful achievement from the greatest ever Olympic sailor but I didn't enjoy it

  • its great he won but its not compelling viewing. They dont even look like they're going that fast.
  • You cannot tell what is happening without the TV/Computer graphics to show where everyone is, as there is no sense of perspective.
  • I watched it and had no idea what was going on, so i tacked and watched the tennis.
  • each boat should have a canon to spice things up a bit.
  • and a pirate
  • and a pirate

How many would watch that OohArrgghhhh ?

  • Might get an entry from Somalia then,

Zero entries from Asia or Africa in this Olympic sport..
  • Individual & Team Piracy Pursuit medals up for grabs in Rio.
