I saw them live in London and the ad libs were hilarious... until I got the show on DVD recorded at another venue and the "ad libs" were exactly the same...

The best ad libs are often well rehearsed, Frankie Howerd and Morcambe and Wise would hone them to perfection. Nothing wrong with that.
