  • Saint Christopher of the Powellites is mightily aggrieved and is gnashing his teeth. Tears of rage are flowing like a river onto his Saville Row suit of many colours.

See he was wearing his hat of great wisdom on Saturday.

Unless you have billions in the bank you will always be a selling team, look at Arsenal and Spurs. In reality you will always get people chasing your players if you're doing well, so it's a compliment and it shows Powell has done a good job. If we weren't doing well and no-one wanted our players, Powell wouldn't be here

Same at Spurs. How many times have we had to rebuild? Hoddle & Waddle, Gascoigne, Klinsmann, Campbell, Carrick, Berbatov, Keane now Modric...and soon will be Bale. Its football. You feed from the clubs below you and ultimately feed the clubs above you. Its the football food chain...and because of the money involved in the game, there is Sweet FA anyone can do about it.

Have a lot of admiration for the way Ars*nal held firm over Fabregas for so long. Also got a lot of admiration for our chairman Levy who done what he could to keep hold of Modric. Champions League football is always going to be a huge draw for players like that and if you're not in it, its tough.

Levy woke up to the way that Spurs was run before Enic. Big name players were brought in towards the end of their careers for low transfer fees with no resale value (think Redknapp, Klinsmann, Ginola, Sheringham's 2nd spell, Poyet, Ferdinand, etc). When he changed the model for the club, bringing in a DOF (Arnesen then later Commoli), the idea was to buy young players, nuture them and then sell them later at huge mark ups. Generally that has worked and got us to where we are today. Carrick, Berbatov, Modric have been sold for huge profit, I'd say a fair amount of the players we've bought in the last say 7/8 years have been sold on at a profit or very minimal loss, the exceptions being Bentley and Rebrov. Obviously Harry brought in Parker, Gallas and Friedel which was against the norm but their expereince and knowhow has been invaluable to the younger ones in the squad. Its about getting a balance.

Its all about survival at the end of the day. From looking in from the outside, Charlton seem to be following the same business model. Bringing in and devloping young hungry players, get the success of the pitch, the success comes off the pitch too. Take Button. A very good keeper. The Spurs coaching staff were eager for him to stay, thats how much they rated him. You've bought him for a relatively modest fee, for a young keeper with a fair amount of league experience, allbeit on loan. Should you send out one keeper on loan and then Button plays back up, he'll eventually get his chance and he'll probably take it. You'll have two decent keepers, sell one on at a profit then bring another young hungry keeper in, then you start again.

When the likes of Man Utd and Ars*nal have seen players slip through their grasp with their financial clout, it puts it all in perspective and you have to accept that is the way it is as much as we dislike it.

I really wouldnt start panicking just yet :-)

  • Speculation, speculation....lots of chat. Big waste of energy.
If a player receives the offer of a fantastic package from another club, he may choose to accept it.
But, other than family reasons, being hacked off for not being able to play in the first team, or greed, why would a player want to leave Charlton Athletic in 2012 ?
The honest endeavour and never-say-die spirit at this club is superb and I am very impressed by Chris Powell and his coaching team. The First XI / squad is exciting, vibrant and convincing. It is a joy to watch.
Stay here, lads. You'd be hard pressed to find better....

    Deja vu !
  • Thanks for the compliment John Boy but I don't think there is much to compare between Spurs and us.

A few seasons ago when we knew it as 3 Point Lane, maybe!!

  • Newcastle are pretty much moneyballing or whatever it is with our very own Parduped and in Ashley they have a tougher chairman than our own Murray who wasn't hard enough on the silver fox and let him smooth talk/bully us into debts that led to the current invisible men involved at the top

Fingers crossed no one is sold but I'll bre grateful if this time in a year SCP is still here and there's a bit more financial stability behind the scenes

  • Great post JohnBoyUk,I have been a Charlton supporter for 51 years and we have always sold our bestplayers.Hinton,Firmanii,Glover,Bonds,Hales,Walsh,Elliott,Flanagan, Bent,Murphy,Parker,Reid and many more and it will go on into the future.

    This.

I've been supporting Charlton almost as long as dickplumb. We've always sold all our best players, correct. And a fat lot of success it has bought us over that time.

  • sale of Reid was a disaster
  • Rodney.
We followed the Moneyball principle when we sold Danny Mills.
    For 4m.

    In 1999.

Since then the Premier league has become richer by a multiple of 3.

If West Ham are going to pay 12m for Chris Solly, i will accept that our club has a well thought out moneyball based strategy.

Solly hasn't played in the Premier League though, whereas Mills had. Not arguing with you on the moneyball thing though.

the valley cafe had to let 2 of their staff go as well. sad,
  • Told you so. Chin up.
  • The motto of this story. "Don't believe all you read on CL". Now, can we get away from the drama and back to the football or is that asking too much.
  • Total players sold, nil.
Total evident discord between manager and owners, nil.
Total amount of moneybollocks spouted on various threads, lots.
  • Agreed.

This board has been a nightmare the last few months and the same 8/9 maybe more people scaremongering, thinking they are in the know etc. You know who you are.

It just goes to show that Airman and maybe any lurking players aside, there is not a single poster on here thats in the know so lets get on with supporting the team and stop all the bull****

If there was any truth that we are in a mess, then Stephens would have gone on the second or third offer
