The thing that gets me about all these devices is the built-in obsolescence. As soon as you have one they are 'old-hat'. Didn't happen in the 'good old days'. Things were built to last. What ever happened to The Titanic?
I think built-in obsolescence has been around for quite a while. My experience of it in a very mundane way was that very many years ago I had to buy some labelling guns for work - you remember those things that supermarket employees used to put sticky labels with prices on tins of beans? Well, the Japanese firm that made them had a new product out every year and I was told that they had the features/colour scheme of the new models worked out at least 5 years in advance. They could have put all the new features on straight away but as a marketing ploy drip-fed them in over time. You'd be surprised at how people could get excited about getting their hands on the latest version. (Sounds familiar). Of course they all got blown away by something as simple as a barcode reader and there's an app for that now.
In the States there's an app created by Citibank and another bank I think that allows you to take a picture of a cheque on your smartphone and your bank will immediately credit your account. No need to actually visit your branch or post it in any more.
Smart phones and personal banking have got a lot of wiggle room for innovation in the coming years. (And bank employees at branches could well go the same way as the baked bean labelling gun.)
The real question is, do Apple need to reinvent the device everytime, like Samsung, HTC and Nokia have to do, and the answer is no, and if you're EE (Orange and T Mobile) and are launching 4G LTE in the next few weeks, you've got your device to launch a network with in a massive way.
The answer is yes, if they want to remain competitive. They'll get left behind. Still got a while left on my iphone 4 contract but i think i might be moving to samsung afterwards. Like the look of iOS6 but i'd rather just update my current iphone than get a new one where i'd get a couple more features like siri working.
Have you had any experience with the iPhones? Really can't decide what to go for.
Love the look of the larger screen on the S3, but not sure if I'd use it much for videos? Can't decide whether to go for the better hardware (S3) or the better OS (iPhone).

The S3 is amazing for videos! As well as the larger screen it's higher res than the iPhone 5 (1280 x 720, vs 1136 x 640) and has a quadcore processor to run it, as opposed to dualcore (albeit 2 faster cores). I've never seen a lag on the S3, no matter what the movie size or resolution.
I had iPhones from the first one up to the 4, and have never looked back since swapping.
The poster AFKA quotes is me, and yep, I don't booze, I don't smoke, I don't bet (odd lottery ticket and trying the wives patiences is kind of betting) so I spend a bit on a shiny new phone every year. Sell the one I've got to a recycling place, make a load of the cash back, get off contract and buy myself a phone.
All good, if that upsets some of the wannabe miseries on here, then that's an added bonus.
Well you can get the Medi CardoDock, which takes accurate blood pressure at a mere £109 on top..... Then you can measure your high blood pressure, brought about by the price.......
