Social Media

edited September 2012 in Not Sports Related
Considering that facebook and twitter have had a rapid growth and become quite a big deal in the last 5-10 years, Has their impact improved society or was it better beforehand?

I know maybe a repetitive question but these forms of social media have changed quite a few things and in such short years.

Its a bit of a routine addiction for me, checking my twitter and facebook, in other words maybe a bit of a bad unnecessary habit. You choose who you follow on twitter and who you are friends with on facebook, but I always find myself a little more irritated before I was when I see other peoples facebook statuses. I should delete my accounts then! But for some reason it's not that simple...that's just my experiences using them. Twitter is great for charlton away game updates most of all, I prefer twitter out the 2.

Benefits of social media:

1. Helps police track criminals

2. The news (just the football for me)

3. Interact with mates

4. Naughty stuff

Problems of social media:

1. Crime and lots of it

2. Creates unnecessary news (what Katie price just said)

3. Highlights annoying people

Anything to add?

Does Facebook and twitter alter your mood in anyway and were we better off without them?

Comments

  • If all my friends came off it, I would happily do the same. But a lot of stuff gets organised on it and I don't like missing out. Yes we were better off without it though.
  • Brilliant in so many ways...downside will be reduction in communicating face to face loss of speech and confidence to have a conversation open debate could have huge negative social impact within a few years our children are already the generation affected and they will have to manage how they develop the tool to ensure F2F communication is maintained
  • Like Facebook as it's a handy way to keep in touch with family members overseas.
  • You can't push the genie back in the bottle nor Pandora back into her box. It rules the live of so many people nowadays. Walking down the street checking for messages oblivious to anything around them. The government will soon (if it hasn't already) latch on to the endless possibilities available through instant mass commmunication.
Is the twitter/facebook age good or bad ? ... many (especiallly young) people live for it and by it. People of my age group probably don't fully understand it as previous generations didn't understand electric light or motor cars or powered flight, TV or newspapers. It's neither good nor bad, it just 'is'
  • Facebook in our house has a detrimental effect, my other half is a housewife who has lots of other friends who sit at home all day, updating status's, such as "kids dropped off", "having a nice cup of tea" etc. some days i have to drop the internet at home just to get basic's done, such as washing, ironing. It has got bad, we went on honeymoon and she spent most the week unable to check as no signal and was very stressed. I think they should introduce pay as you go Facebook in some instances.

That is worrying Steve and shows the downside of the medium. I'm sure a lot of people have the same problem. Addiction/compulsive behaviour is a highly complex subject and is, I fear, very widespread thru our contemporary culture. Addiction to many things from class A drugs to Coronation Street and much inbetween. I'm a bit addicted to CL .. though I would never admit it !
  • The impact it has had on business has been unbelievable, especially in the case of Twitter.
  • in 2007 when FB came to the front of Social Networking my office banned it within weeks due to over 1000 people staring at other people pictures and lives, and not working.

  • McDonald's is a huge business because they add (what I've heard) addictive chemicals in the food to keep helpless people coming back to eat their unhealthy food.

Maybe Facebook is the same, is there something about the layout or the way it works that makes it addictive? Instead of unhealthy eating at McDonald's, it's just a waste of time (if you use it as a priority before anything else).
  • FB is shite now, only use it to organise a birthday or to look at pics and chat to drunk girls. Hate it still

Twitter is awesome, mainly as its great for updates whereever you are Sport, whatever! also follow a few accounts which tweet naked women which always brightens my day :) Dont think twitter has a negative really other then its addictive!

    both I reckon!

    Problems of social media

Not sure I agree with many of these. I don't think it does really help police track criminals - technology yes, social media I'm not so sure. It certainly helps people report crimes which would not affect them if it didn't exist (ie reporting someone who tweeted something offfensive to someone else).
Porn always existed, it was just previously to be found in magazines in hedges, it is easy to come by now but it was always there. As were annoying friends, they just previously telephoned you to annoy you.
And as for news, if people didn't read it people wouldn't write. And that is as true for social medai as any other. If people didn't want their blogs read they would keep diaries, if they don't gain popularity thy generally don't get updated. So Kate Price may not be interesting to you but she is to sadly so many. In fact she has a page in the Sun so its not social meida that's keeping her around.

It has had a huge impact on society and the way we communicate. But IMO none more so than the developments that went before. Imagine when they first got telephones - being able to speka to someone miles away for the first time. Or when the printed press was developed and you could read what was going on in the city from your living room rather than having to go to the local bar and wait for the stage coach to bring you informaiton.

On reflection I think it depends what industry you work in. I work in sales and marketing for a large data/IT company, so it works very well for my own purposes.
  • On the bad side I've realised there are a lot more complete & utter idiots than I ever thought possible.

Whether it's people being gullible, spreading malicious rumours or some truly ignorant, stone age views & comments (the comments directed to Mark Halsey, Tom Daly, Evra, Collymore etc).

It's given a platform to those people who would normally be ignored or not heard because they lack the balls & intelligence to say anything worthwhile "in the real world".

On the positive side, Twitter & Facebook should be used to identify these complete and utter imbeciles and make them disappear before they become too big a burden on our nation.
  • Spot on @SparrowsLaneLion

The recent liverpool fans tweets about the ref back this up...
  • i hate peoples use of hash tags. mainly when used outside the world of twitter. #likehere
  • never been on either fb or twitter
  • Dable with both.

Don't have the social life I used to so FB is a handy and easy way to stay in.contact, see what others are up to and generally use it to take the pee out of myself.

Twitter I'm not overly keen on. Seems to provide a platform for a lot of general bitchyness and nastiness, and dominated by people craving attention and popularity, imo.

Defies belief. On the day that a city stands still to pay their respects to 96 fellow Liverpudlians who lost their lives, some of those from the same city, or in the name of LFC, send tweets wishing Halsey to get cancer and for his wife who is suffering from cancer to die.

People like that should just be got rid of.

  • Both have had their day now, outdated.
  • I hate Twitter & Facebook .

I'm old enough to remember when people actually spoke to each other.
  • I think they would be positives if people could use them in moderation - same with mobile phones. When they become an addiction - it isn't good.
