This may be a little long winded but be aware that over christmas tickets will be snapped up quickly and become very expensive. Eastcoast trains via Doncaster have yet to be released and also eastmidlands trains direct to Sheffield have yet to go on sale.
Going via Stockport may be a wise move

Train tickets seem to have come down to similar prices to last year. Can get £50 return and that's from Leigh on Sea. That is what i paid last year.0
