never been a Bond fan but the trailers I had seen for this film intrigued me ... so glad I went ... very enjoyable and far 'grittier' than the normal Bond films

... and the 'villain' is terrific
  • Anyone spot New Cross in the movie?

Yeh was sure it was New Cross, you've just confirmed! Must be the first time an Aston Martin has gone within a 1mile radius of the Den.

Really enjoyed it and Daniel Craig is on the money. I loved Roger Moore but Craig is not a pretty boy, he's rough round the edges but cool, and proper hard to the extent that he's on the edge of becoming an unstable nutjob (hence touching on alcoholism in the film). I think this is how Fleming's Bond was meant to be.

I find it hard to compare with the old ones as they have sentimental value growing up watching them, but this is the best of the Brosnan and Craig ones just ahead of Casino Royale.
  • Agree with most of comments above, great film and enjoy the new direction they seem to be taking and the edginess of Craig as a 007 more real...don't half miss me gadgets though, we were discussing this last night and came up with these days we pretty much have all the technology we have seen in previous Bond films so were do they go for something new different and mildly plausible gadget wise???
  • Saw it tonight, thought it was good but not as great as some people saw it.
  • Saw it yesterday afternoon and I loved it. A solid 9 out of 10.
  • I loved the fact that gadgets took a back seat.

    SPOILER ALERT

All the homemade stuff and the classic double barrelled shotgun stuff in the old house was much better than exploding pens and invisible cars imo
  • My other half used to work for an estate agents, in one of Brosnans bond films where he is driving a speedboat through docklands he drives past or through a London double decker bus with the companies logo on the side, she organised that advertising etc.
  • Good way to watch this would be drinkalonga product placement. You'll be sozzled in half an hour...
  • Saw this last night, how good an actor is Javier Bardem? One of the modern greatest villain actors, hes fantastic in no country for old men. Best Bond villain ever? This bond definitely is a way of saying goodbye to the old bond and welcoming a new era.
  • I stayed away from this thread until I'd seen it too and really glad I did!

I am not the biggest Bond fan and usually can take them or leave them but I have to say I really enjoyed this one. Craig is proving to be a first rate Bond and looking forward to seeing how the new characters develop into their roles too.

Ignoring the huge holes in it the film benefited from having such a simple plot and concentrating on character building and non-stop action instead. Even I could follow what was going on this time :-0

Agree completely with @IdleHans re:product placement comment, that did start to grate a bit and, why oh why, did they show so much of the movie in the adverts beforehand??? They even showed a trailer for it in the cinema I went too...grrrr.

Thought Bond was going to pop into the "Venue"

would be difficult to explain without posting a bunch of spoilers, but it seems pretty clear that at the end theres a marked change in things.

I was going to say that. Perhaps AFKA left before the end ?
  • cracking film, absolutely loved it - probably my favourite bond (both film and actor)
  • what's all this 'goodbye to the old bond, welcoming a new era' stuff

Agreed AFKA, it's like they've tried to "reboot" a film series that really didn't need it.

  • Saw this last night (Orange 2 tickets for 1 price). Big let down after Charlton's 5-4 win the night before. About 1 hour and a half too long. Totally overated IMO!
  • If anything this Bond is bridging back to the old school - the pieces were all dropped into place by the end. Casino Royale and QoS pretty much avoided the obvious cliches. I suspect the next Bond movie will be much more 'traditionally Bond' now that Q and co. are back in place.

For me, Skyfall was a Chris Nolan-lite action movie with a bunch of Bond beats, nicely shot and well acted. It's far from perfect. The plotholes are numerous, which is standard Bond anyway, but a couple of them were, for me, so glaringly nonsensical that it did spoil it a little. Not least *mild spoiler* the fact that Bond was basically dead before the credits rolled, with no explanation whatsoever for his survival! Lots of fun, but technically, a very flawed film.
  • watched it this week and have to admit highlights were Bardem and Craig's acting (both putting in a stellar showing!), but the rest came across a bit Hollywood and lazy, which is down to Mendes (lack of any real plot and dragging every scene out to fill the run-time) and the moneymen who littered it with bloody annoying product placement. Thankfully someone told me not to take my seat until the start of the film so I missed all the adverts and trailer stuff....thankfully!

A decent spy caper but failed to live up to the hype.
  • Just got back from watching it, thought it was very good. Think I preferred casino Royale by a gnats penis length but this one was very, very entertaining

This is absolute genius, how does your favourite Bind fare?
  • Saw Skyfall yesterday. A decent film but only came alive when Javier Bardem turned up. Thought it lacked an emotional punch.

By the way i avoided this thread until I had seen the film.
  • One thing I wasn't quite sure of - the baddie dies at the end - but do they ever actually get the hard drive that was at the centre of the film back ?

Great question!! The film had so many plotholes, they're still coming!! None of it matters until someone explains to me how a guy gets shot twice, falls 200 feet into the water, clearly drowns, but turns up in the next scene drinking tequila. Gritty new Bond movies my a55!
  • Picky, picky! { :- )
  • Loved it. Didn't even notice it was that long. I have to watch crap movies for a living so very rarely go to the cinema. Glad I did. I go to the cinema to be entertained - it was flippin' fantastic - as Bond movies go!
