following on from the referee test thread....

what would happen if a players number gets held up to be substituted and he walks off slow enough for the ref to warrant a yellow card for time wasting but this turns out to be his 2nd yellow of the match.
could the substitution still take place?

    Until the player has left the field of play and the replacement has entered it the substitution has not been made. As such the substitution would be cancelled and the team would be down to ten men.

    A particularly ridiculous example of this - a player receiving his second booking for removing his shirt whilst being substituted :

    No, the substitution hasn't taken place until one player has left the field of play and the other entered.
