Lewisham Council agrees to issue judicial review proceedings on hospital decision http://bit.ly/ZBFR1M

Lewisham Council agrees to issue judicial review proceedings on hospital decision
Tonight Lewisham council voted in favour of granting authority to proceed with judicial review proceedings to ask the court to quash the recommendations of the Trust Special Administrator of South London Healthcare Trust's report of 8 January (which recommended the downgrading of A&E at Lewisham hospital and the closure of its obstetric maternity services).

This follows the pre-action notice issued by the council earlier this month after Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health, agreed to proceed with the recommendations as set out by the TSA. The pre-action notice stated the council's belief that to include Lewisham hospital in the TSA remit goes beyond what the law permits. The Secretary of State's response was that he did not agree with this view. However, Lewisham's lawyers believe the council have a strong case and it is worth proceeding with it.

The council has set up a legal challenge fund which members of the public can donate to to support the cost of bringing these proceedings. Should the funds not be required they will be donated to charity. Support the legal challenge fund here.

The vote came at a full council meeting which also discussed the budget for 2013-14 and recommended a 1.5% rise in council tax and accompanying budget cuts to meet the required savings of £21.3million based on the budget given to the council from central government.

My name is Linda. I'm a long-standing 38 Degrees member, and I'm sending this email because I know first-hand why it matters so much to stop the privatisation of our NHS.

On Friday afternoon, I will deliver a copy of the petition against NHS privatisation to the Health Minister. When I hand the petition over, I will tell the minister about what happened to my baby. He died when he was just seven weeks old whilst receiving care from my privatised GP out-of-hours service.

Can you stand behind me when I deliver the petition, by adding your name quickly before Friday afternoon?
    https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/nhs-section75

Last week was a hard one for me. It was the inquest into the death of my baby son, Axel. He died last November from pneumonia. His illness went untreated despite repeated calls and visits over the course of five days to my NHS out-of-hours doctors' service, which had been recently privatised.

I feel the inquest left many of the biggest questions unanswered - like what role NHS privatisation may have played in the mistakes which led to the death of my baby boy.

After hearing evidence of how that private health contractor had acted, I feel determined to do all I can to stop further privatisation of our NHS. That's why I've decided to get more involved with 38 Degrees, and why I'm going to see the Health Minister this Friday. I'd really appreciate it if your name was on the petition when I meet him.
    https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/nhs-section75

We had a bit of a breakthrough with this campaign yesterday. The government announced that because of all the pressure they would withdraw and rewrite their NHS privatisation regulations. The petition which I'd signed, along with 240,000 other 38 Degrees members, was mentioned in Parliament. That shows we can make a difference.

But I remember, as I'm sure that you will, that when the government promises to rewrite a plan, that doesn't necessarily mean that the new version will be any better than the old one. We need to make sure they genuinely drop any attempt to force GPs to open up services to privatisation.

I would love to have as many signatures as possible by Friday afternoon when I visit the Health Minister. So please add your name now:
    https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/nhs-section75

    Thank you.

    Linda

PS: You can read more about what happened to my baby in this piece in the Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2013/mar/02/nhs-commercialisation-bereaved-mother-fight But please sign the petition first: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/nhs-section75

Yeah, but Boris is well funny though, innit?

Could the teflon coating finally be coming off Mr. Johnson? One can only hope so.

Ah, that's more like it, perhaps people will start to see Boris Johnson for what he actually is rather than what he wants people to think he is.

Is Boris Johnson for or against the closure of Lewisham Hospital A&E? He is in favour.

You can play the 'posh buffoon' gig for a while and the mug punters lap it up but at some point in politics your back is to the wall and you have to show people where you stand - that's Boris now.

Johnson is a very, very clever guy but he sure as shit ain't what people think he is.

Oh dear, Boris really doesn't like it when the great unwashed have the temerity to ask him tough questions does he?

What he is basically saying is that he won't campaign to save the A&E because there is no guarantee of success and his 'colleagues' have already given him sound advice on the closure.

I think you can safely assume that Johnson is more interested in keeping in the good books of his Tory colleagues than looking after the plebs of SE London - he won't be contesting the next Mayoral election, he'll be back as a Tory MP in the Commons.

Still, when Lewisham A&E is closed at least we can all reflect on what a good laugh old Boris was, eh?

What does anyone expect? Can there really be anyone guileless enough to believe his heart-in-the-right-place upper-class buffoon act any more? The bloke is an absolute fucking plum, and has done nothing for the working class of the city he is paid handsomely to govern.

People fell for the act not once, but twice - and they will fall for it again.

This is the first major time Johnson has had to balance his personal interests - that of being a Tory PM - with his current professional one - representing all of the people of London as their Mayor.

Well, wouldn't you fucking know it? When push comes to shove good old Boris chooses to curry favour with the Tory elites who will decide his future than the electorate who merely pay his wages and are a mere speedbump in his career as far as he is really concerned.

The only loyalty Boris Johnson has is to his own ambition.

Spanners will be wearing t-shirts supporting the campaign in the warm up tomorrow. Fair play to them and it'll be even more of a result if the FA fine them afterwards for making a political statement ;-)

A community club that smashed up playgrounds after they lost the play off semi to Birmingham?
  • Options
Your making no sense , what has that got to do with what the club do for the community ?
  • Options
To be honest Millwall do a great load of stuff on the community front, they are let down by the nasty fan element that follow their club but that should not detract from the good stuff that the club do. Their support for #SaveLewishamA&E has been great, it has helped raise the profile of the campaign and should not be knocked. The #SaveLewishamA&E campaign were also very grateful to the Charlton fans that supported them when they set up the campaign outside the ground before a recent match.

When I went on the march there were a number of Millwall fans that I saw, and a lot of Charlton as well, i also saw Crystal Palace fans on the march too.

They've made a decision to downgrade it, they won't change their stance no matter what, no point in trying is there.

Nathan if we all took that stance, there would be no CAFC at the Valley. People power can change things ie. the poll tax.
