Windows 8

  • Yep. It's an average tablet o/s. Decent even. It is also, however, an absolute abomination of a desktop o/s
  • I dislike it even on the surface (it was really designed for)
  • It seems to me like it's been designed purely for touch screen users and regular PC users were just an after-thought chucked in at the end.

Fortunately for me, I run 7 and will continue to do so until something better comes out.................
  • I bought a Windows 8 touchscreen laptop. I've used the touchscreen about once. Regret it entirely.

There aren't any Windows 8 features I use that I didn't already regularly use on Windows 7. The 'Dashboard' looks good but I find it useless.
  • Windows 8.1 is an excellent OS. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just jumping on the bandwagon.

It's incredibly efficient with even poor hardware and I'd easily recommend it over windows 7

For desktops, It could be argued that it did, some time ago, with Linux Mint. It's currently on version 17, Qiana, which will be supported until April 2019.

If anyone wants to try it, you can run it off the ISO dvd (slightly slower obviously) without disrupting Windows, to see if you like it. And, frankly, what's not to like? Fast, free and with a pretty full package of powerful software including GIMP (you'd have thought they could have come up with a different name!). You can also use Wine to run some but not all windows-based software on the system. I'm using either chrome or firefox browsers, whichever takes my fancy at the time with it and Thunderbird as the email client. It still scares me that you have no need to run any security software though! (And I've still got windows 7 running on a laptop and android on a tablet.) Mr Non-compatible that's me!
