Is there any way we could sign him to play now?

Presumably if Charlton made a donation to his current club they may agree to terminate his contract. Making him free to sign for anyone he likes regardless of the transfer window

hmmm I think we might be investigated for that, couldn't we loan them someone and pay their wages?

That would be seen as trying to circumvent the rules and just get us into trouble aka AFC Wimbledon and West Ham.

Pre-season friendly at Dluwich would be nice and local for me :-)

He'll probably need some time to be ready to step up.

But we could, I'm sure sign him now if we chose - as long as we don't play him in the Prem.

A few years ago we signed HH from Ipswich in March (£900,000) but not allowed to play him. He was injured anyway.

Maybe IF we signed him we could loan him out to a league team but I think we're getting a bit ahead of ourselves. He's only played one reserve game.

What are the rules though? Do they prevent us from signing anyone already under contract junior league club, or just from Football League clubs? Is it possible that he's playing for Dulwich but not actually under contract?

You can sign anyone, anytime you like.

But you can only play them according to regulations.

See my post on HH above.

yeah and mark mccammon, Saw him on his debut up at tranmere, Awful. They had to teach him to head the ball! But you have to give these players a chance, Ian Wright was at Greenwich Borough until he was 21 I think.

Aye, i remember McCammon. First time he played for us at the Valley the old geezer next to me said "Jesus fucking Christ would you look at the size of that fella". Admittedly the bloke is huge, but he had the unfortunate quality of possessing no left foot, no right foot, and the heading power of a small child.

I saw his injury yesterday on SSN playing for Donny - looked pretty bad

Charlie Macdonald scored regularly for the stiffs and appears to have found his level in the Conference.

Two goals don't make a career although certainly a vey encouraging debut.

Have you Seen the Film Goal, If a mexican/Yank can do it, He can do it!Ha HA!
  • The way i see it is that signing a young player from non league isn't much different to bringing in a player through the youth ranks. They both have potential and will not have experience at a higher level. Maybe the non league prospect will be better as he'll have played competitive football whereas the youth team player gets a run out for the under 18s.
He won't cost too much money so it's hardly a gamble and he can be loaned out to say Orient or Brentford to see how he copes with league football.

What about Onome Sodje (?spelling)? He's still a teenager I believe yet playing and scoring for Gravesend and Northfleet.

I'm not too sure why we released him at such a young age when others were retained into their twenties with no real chance of making it.

Well, when Mark Robson was reserve team manager, Onome turned up late and was told he wasn't now playing. When he moaned about it, Robson told him, "Sodje"

And he never played for Charlton again.

  • Gravesend is our old 2nd X1 isn't it? MacDonald, Varney, Debolla, Sodje, Long, Ricketts.......any others?

And they've a bit of a chance of making the playoffs. Imagine Gravesend & Northfleet in Division 2 next season.

Ground share at The Valley? - no only joking.

More practicable - and Scally and the Jills need the dosh - there's always Priestfield.

Otherwise where will our Stiffs and Women play?

question: if a players is out of contract can you sign and play him outside of the window? If so he would have to buy out his own contract? And if we dangle a big signing on fee, a few hundred k, who's gonna complain?

    :)

If a player is out of contract, you can sign them at anytime.

If a player is registered to another club, you can arrange the deal at anytime, and it goes through on the day the window reopens
