  • Blimey. Didn't see that coming. Very sad.
  • RIP, broadcasting and cricket will miss him...
  • More sad news. RIP
  • Great broadcaster and a fantastic knowledge of cricket. Will be sorely missed.RIP
  • Bloody hell first Greigy now CMJ, rip
  • RIP Sir, god bless. Condolences to family and friends. Great cricket broadcaster, will be sadly misses and TMS will not be the same again.
  • Very much an integral part of Test Match Special even if rather more understated than some.

    RIP
  • Broadcasting legend, as said, TMS will not be the same. My old man is totally gutted, he loves Gerry Anderson's work and he loves TMS, both gone within a week.
  • RIP CMJ. Was diagnosed with cancer a year ago, so I read. I'll raise a glass to him at the Lords test v the Aussies this summer.
  • RIP CMJ, TMS will miss you. Absolutely gutting news.

His absence during last summer and this winters TMS box was very noticeable. I was looking forward to his return but sadly that won't happen now.
I was fortunate to meet him on a couple of occasions and he was as charming as appeared on the radio.
He wrote his autobiography last year and it is a great read for true cricket fans.
  • Just seen this news. Such a shame and a great loss to cricket and fans of TMS.

    RIP
  • Part of my growing up sad loss, but joining those great commentators in the sky.
  • Sadly this was expected - he had cancer and it was a matter of when not if.

RIP - a very knowledgeable and experienced commentator and journalist and a good player himself.
  • There were three cricketing names who were suffering from cancer - besides Tony Grieg and CMJ there is also Robin Jackman.
  • Had the pleasure of playing against CMJ and his son Robin (who went on to play for Sussex) some years back at Horsham CC.
CMJ was no mean performer himself and in the bar he talked with the authority you'd expect from one of the great cricket journalists of the modern era.
Another huge loss to the game so soon after Tony Greig's sad demise.
    RIP CMJ.

  • Very sad news. One of the voices on the radio and TV Cricket coverage that I grew up with in the 70's. Saw him once as the after-dinner speaker at a Cricket Society Awards evening, he was excellent.
His 2009 "The Top 100 Cricketers of All Time" is IMO the definitive list. ( 1- Bradman, 2- W.G. Grace, 3- Sobers).

The initials CMJ are forever etched in Cricket Broadcasting.
  • just listened to Jonathan Agnew on the radio saying what an eccentric CMJ was - always late and even turned up at Lords when he should have been at the Oval !!

    RIP
  • As said above by others he also was a voice that I grew up with whilst listening to cricket in my early years late 70s onwards
    RIP CMJ
