World Cup 2015 coming to Football Stadiums

Good news is that the 2015 World cup will see games played at:

Wembley
Old Trafford
King Power Staduim - Leicester City
St James' Park - Newcastle
Elland Road - Leeds
Amex - Brighton
Villa Park or Ricoh - Villa/Coventry
Aston Gate - Bristol City
Stadium MK - MK Dons

Bad news is that it is the rugger World Cup.

Why are the RFU (who refused to allow the FA to use Twickenham when Wembley was being re-built) now so keen to ignore their own clubs stadia? Leicester Tigers have a 24k ground a short walk from City's football venue and the tigers are said to be furious..

They are using Twickers, the Millennium and Glouscester Kingsholm so why not other rugger venues?

Simple fact is they want the money from the bigger and better appointed soccer grounds in the heart of big cities with better corporate facilities and transport.

The RFU promised an average attendance of 55k so have had to swallow their pride and move in with the Association boys.

Two bob minority sport with a superiority complex

Comments

  • Would the rugby World Cup attract average attendances of 55k ? Obviously England games will attract many, but if you look at the pool stages there are games that will struggle to get a few thousand, a select few from last time; Georgia v Romania, Canada v Japan, Namibia v Samoa, Russia v USA etc.

Great that rugby has finally accepted the superiority of football by using almost exclusively our sports stadiums in preference to their own.
  • And theyll be allowed to drink in the very same seats that football fans are forbidden to i imagine...even though it will be against the stadium's rules.
  • And let off flares

    : - )
  • Wow, bizarre. Rugby is a great sport.
  • The RFU didn't refuse the use of Twickenham, Richmond Council refused to change the planning and licensing on the stadium for Football, despite a request from the RFU who were open to the idea.
  • I went to Scotland vs Uruguay at murrayfield back in '99 when Scotland and Wales had it. Barely a 1000 there. Scotland V SA sold out. No way they'll get 55k to see anyone other than England in the group stages
  • Wow, bizarre. Rugby is a great sport.

Just not very well supported it would seem.
  • Not as widely as football but then I struggle to think of a sport which matches ours.
