4G or not 4G - That is the question

I have been very impressed with 4G – nothing like artificial pitches in my day! It is ok for Premier League clubs but with so many lower division teams struggling financially, football really needs to embrace it. Some say it doesn’t play like grass, but grass doesn’t play like grass! Compare our surface with The Emirates for example. 4G is now at a level where proper football can be played on it and a) Will mean less games are postponed, b) Allow the club to make more revenue from the pitch area and C) be more consistent throughout the season.

I thought this was going to be a rant about EE. 4G pitches are great - but it's still not 'the same' as playing on grass. Still get bloody friction burns from it as well!

(EE are shit by the way)

Now I am confused. Get a call from Vodafone the other day asking me if I want to upgrade to a 4G phone. Tell them to stick it like I normally do when I don't understand what something is. :-(
Now you're telling me its some kind of artificial grass! Robbing b*s*ds!!

I think you only get friction burns because the pitches aren't watered before play. In a professional stadium they would be watered before the match, and probably at half time. In that respect its no different to grass, you fall over on a bone dry, hard pitch and you get grazed up pretty bad.
  • it would be worth à trial for a season.

would it mean Everyone have to have it in the football league therefore have to agréé to it?

The Saracens rugby one is incredible. Have played football and rugby on it, and it's just like playing on a summer grass pitch. So yes there are still a few grazes, but nothing that hurts really, and it plays fantastically.

They save a serious amount of money on maintenance costs per season and also it allows them to be incredibly active from a community basis. Think all rugby pitches will head this way eventually.

Personally think it works a lot better in rugby than football though

I remember pre season and having your trousers sticking to your backside after the game as a result of doing a sliding tackle during the game.

With all this bad weather we have had this year, Maidstone played all but one game at home on the day it was planned reguardless of the conditions. The only game called off was due to the ground staff being unable to shift the snow intime for kick off, but it was said the pitch itself was fine.

Has only just finished its 3g pitch a couple of months back, significant difference between 3g and 4g?

To be honest, I don't think there is a big difference from 3G and 4G - different companies - but both play like decent grass pitches, which is more than we can say for ours. As for Paddy, I would guess he is reasonably close to retiring, maybe when he does go - 4G should be his replacement.

Always hated that joke- they should have asked- what do you prefer Astro or grass? Even Rodney would have known what Astroturf was.

If we had a 4G pitch, then maybe we could play U18 games before 1st team home games. Might encourage more people to arrive early, and would benefit the youngsters development as well.

Yes, and I think it would benefit the youngsters too. Could then play a womens match afterwards as well. It is the future.

    Steady, that's going too far.

Off on a tangent I heard that some bird has apparently just matched Peter Shiltons number of caps for England.

Well no, sorry aunty Beeb, she hasn't.

Maidstone United's new ground has one. Has seemed fine this season. No complaints from any visiting team, only one postponement all season (unusual at that level) and is played on more or less every night of the week, which brings in extra revenue and interest.

Absolute no brainer for me - though I'm sure groundsmen won't agree ;-)
