Salisbury City 2 Welling United 1 Match Report

Hopes were high amongst the wings fans prior to this top of the table clash at the Ray Mac stadium, but alas Welling united were defeated 2-1 in a scrappy and tense game.

Both sides struggled to create any clear cut chances. Salisbury scored 1st through top scorer Jamie white with a shot that unfortunately slipped through the welling goalkeeper Sam Mott hands for a 1-0 lead.

Welling tried to force an equaliser but were unable to punish Salisbury who harried and pressed wings in midfield.

Welling just couldn't get there passing game going and with Salisbury snapping at every oppurtunity were pushed back, wings played too deep and gave away possesion to cheaply. Lack of concentration and woefull distribution cost them dearly.

Salisbury scored deep in the second half again through Jamie White to make it 2-0 and brought his total to 23 for the season so far.

Welling didn't really create any chances going forward but with about 10 minutes remaining were awarded a penalty after the Salisbury goalie brought down a welling player and was red carded, Salisbury didn't have a goalie on the bench and an outfield player took the shirt to be beaten from a Joe Healey pen which went in off the post. The sending off of the salisbury Goalkeeper is significant as the 1st team goalie is also out injured so i would imagine they will need to bring in an emergency loan.

Welling huffed and puffed and although Salisbury were down to 10 men Welling still couldn't find a way through the salisbury defence. A very frustrating day for welling which means an away win at Staines Town on tuesday night will keep there title hopes alive. Welling had 7 players booked.

This was a poor game from Wellings point of view and i'm sure they will put this result behind them, they had 7 1st team players out and really need to pick themselves up after this performance and get back on track

Salisbury are now 8 points behind Welling with a game in hand,They play Dover at home on Tuesday night who are pushing for promotion.

Attendance was about 1200 with about 200+ very vocal wings fans.

  • cant believe how far ahead Welling are after their early season form - wasnt it 13 straight wins mid-season ?
  • Think I'll pop down to Staines on tuesday
  • Hmmmm.........hope they hold firm to the end of the season. It would be a shame if they 'did a Charlton' and blew what was a massive lead. Next 2 games will tell. Good luck to everyone at PVR. Had many great times down there in the 80's. is John Bartley still scoring for the Wings? Hehe
