Back Pass Rule

  • How about the flip side? Goalkeeper handles outside the area, normally gets sent off, outfield player handles outside area, rarely gets sent off. Think Randy Andy's got it right, the law was brought in for a reason that maybe no longer applies, so has it evolved into preventing a goal? Quite possibly.
  • Not a booking. The free-kick is punishment enough.
  • There are times when I think the red card for a keeper handling outside the area is harsh. If the keeper is only just outside his area, if he thinks he's still inside then surely it's not deliberate handball, the keeper isn't deliberately breaking the rules, yet some referees will produce a red. I'm thinking the red card at Orient away last year for example, keeper took off from within his box and couldn't have known (Without taking his eyes from the ball) that he had left the area. To be honest I'm getting sick of the current rules where the slightest misjudgement can cause a red card. There was a time when the red card was only for the most serious of infractions.

On the flip side, Simon Tracy's handball at the Valley where he had his toes on the line and his arms fully extended probably should have been red rather than yellow. He knew the ball was outside the area, otherwise he wouldn't have lined his toes up with the edge of the white line and stretched to claim the ball.
  • All of you lot saying he should be sent off, or whatever......how many of you would cry and go mental if Hamer got sent off for doing something similar? A red is stupid. If he palmed it away I'm pretty sure it's not a free kick.

of course its a free kick, 'handling' a backpass results in an indirect free kick.

Well I've been involved in games where a parry of the ball gets let go! SO keepers have to let the ball in or face cards now?

Well the Ref was choosing to ignore the rules or didn't know them then. Not sure a professional Ref with TV coverage has that luxury or indeed should be ignoring rules.

  • The rules surrounding keepers handling outside the area are very harsh, the keeper who has to make a split second decision whether to go for the ball, and accidentally slides a few inches outside his area before handling it surely doesn't deserve a red. He has to look at the ball and look at the opposition player, so it's hardly a surprise he's not giving the line 100% attention.

I think most refs apply a bit of common sense. If a keeper slides out to gather the ball but misjudges the sliding distance and goes over the line then it's not going to be a red (as far as I know), but if a keeper is adjudged to have saved/got a hand to a shot outside the area (like Hamer vs Orient) then it will be red.

well the ref was shit then
  • If the Ball is passed too hard that the keeper can not stop without using his hands and it goes in its the defender's fault.

if the keeper uses his hands then he breaks the rules.

he could get à red if its à goal scoring howler.

    whats the confusion?
