    We did it about 9-10 years ago. We lost part of one room where the staircase went up, and in retrospect should have taken out the chimney so we had more space (had this romantic idea of using the real fire, which we do, about 4 nights a year!).
    Was definitely a good thing, now have 2 kids and we would be having to look at moving if we hadn't done it as we have no space where you can't move for toys, junk, books, lego etc.
    We used Econoloft, and generally they were good. The general builders were fine but they didn't do the electrics right and we had a leak from the plumbing when they first finished but it never recurred. No complaints other than that.
