I can easily imagine Shelvey and Jenkinson being picked off for nominal fees aged 16, instead of reaching the 1st team before being sold.

You mean like the way Jermain Defoe was signed by West Ham? Or JLloyd Samuel by Villa?

We might not have liked those players leaving before they could sign pro contracts but we ended up making over £1.4m for Defoe. We'll get a fraction of that from losing both Edwards and Palmer.

We also sold Sean McGinty to Man U a couple of seasons ago and received decent compensation - said to be around £350K though that depends on rumour.

    Then the rules changed...

Another question is how many current hot prospects came from non tier 1 academies?

    Zaha
    Naughton
    Powell
    hart
    Jones p
    Snalling
    A young
    Jonjo

    Quite a list

Not sure if this is addressed but why is it assumed that the quality of coaching for a young player will be better at a Premier League team. Stoke play crap football, Brighton the opposite. Can Stoke go and take Brighton's most promising youngsters?

I reckon we still get good value from our academy. We may have lost a couple of gems but there are others in there and the economics of the Championship mean that we are to at least some extent dependant on either playing or selling some products of the academy to go some way to balancing the books. Also, we presumably have not given up on Cat 1 status for ever, and we have to have a going academy concern in order to make the step up, rather than start again from scratch.

My worry is that Paul Hart and Steve Avory, who seem to be very talented at spotting and developing potential will themselves either get disheartened and move on, or be poached by someone already at or truly gunning for Cat 1 status.

CAFC academy in same bracket (equal 129th) as Benfica, Nuremberg, Fiorentina, Palace, Crewe, Luton... Probably reflects CAFC youngsters developed when we were in the PL.

Surely we could get sponsorship for the academy - "another fine product of the Bloggs Free Range Eggs Academy poached by Chelsea", etc?.

Wouldn't that be Parker, Shelvey, Jenkinson and Elliott? 4 players all currently in the PL. That table suggests we have a reasonable track record, when you look at comparable English clubs, but also highlights the lower number of English produced players in Europe's top leagues.

Yep. It's proof of the popular perception that PL clubs are less likely to develop their Academy players into first team regulars and just go for the quick fix import.

Looking at the EPPP on Wiki, Jenkinson has made a total of 23 apps for Arsenal so far in all competitions. Therefore, we might have got £350,000 for him so far, or only £200,000. The absolute max we could hope for is £1,356,000, but only if the player makes 100 apps eventually. It looks like a big incentive for the big clubs to either dump young players early to avoid extra payments, or not play them in the first team.
