they kept the Ipswich (home) fans in after the 87 semi final and let the Charlton(away) fans leave first to get to the station
as if that'd happen nowadays , i wonder if the Ipswich fans had a good cry about it

hahahaha, yep got me. I did mean 86/7 though.....honest

  • Still is the best atmosphere i have experienced at the valley, even the east and west stands were rocking,

Absolutely agree. Never known an atmosphere like it. So loud I remember my ears hurting when the teams came out.

Can't have kept them in for very long as there was a huge mob of them trying to kick off as we made our way back to the car. I was only 13 and absolutely bricked it when some numpty took a swing at my mates dad with a cricket bat.

Remember the 86/87 play offs largely for the terror of this one and Elland Rd and St Andrews!

I remember feeling no tension whatsoever, always felt that Charlton was in control of the tie. Had a couple of Ipswich sitting stony faced next to me in the home bit of the South Stand, not a great day for them.

I felt like that until I found out Mendonca was injured and then I started to worry, just a little bit. I should have known better though - that 97/98 team was just such a reliable, consistent team and not without a few quality players. Good enough to be champions in many less competitive Tier 2 seasons (would have pissed the current one imho). I don't suppose I'll ever enjoy a season as much as that again as long as I live.

Probably the best night game I've been to as well. As others have said, the place was absolutely rocking even in the East stand where we were. I remember it being a really muggy close evening. Newts goal is still one of my all time favourites for Charlton (anyone remember his volley at Anfield too?) and once that went in it was never in doubt. Incredible to think that defence went from absolutely impenetrable to shipping 4 at Wembley. Thank goodness Mendonca wasn't too badly injured.

Have you got highlights of the 2nd leg at sellout??

    Sadly not Terry.

Please note the op didn't specify which playoff when I posted. (bl@@dy clownshoes ;-))

I did my only two games in the Covered End that season, one was that one, the other was the 5-0 win over West Brom, with the highly choreographed Kins free kick that looked too clever to have been on purpose.

A fabulous, unforgettable night. It was as if there were an unspoken collective decision that THIS WAS OUR TIME. I remember looking round in disbelief - absolutely everyone was caught up in the atmosphere. The Cup replay against Brizzle in '94 was superb - how much noise could only 8000 people make ? - partly because Old Trafford was next up. I remember hearing that Sunderland would be meeting us at Wembley and I couldn't have cared less. It didn't matter who we would be playing - Charlton were well and truly on the march !!
