  • 6 shillings and 8d?

Well "six and Eight" but yes.

    No one ever said 80d

Hands up if you have no idea what we're talking about.

Flash sod flashing a ten bob note in the boozer. Two half crowns, a shilling, two thru'penny bits and a couple of pennies will do.

what? Beer at less than 5 new pence?

    I'll have a go...there were I think 240 pennies in an old pre-decimal pound, so 80 3d coins?

    I think...
  • 80 is correct. 20 shillings in a pound. Multiplied by 4.

10 pints for less than 7 bob. Those were the days.
  • I have two pre- decimalisation coins in my hand that add up to 2&6 (2s&6d or two shillings and sixpence) but one of them is NOT a florin (a two shilling coin).
    What are the two coins?

  • You have one florin and a tanner, if one is not a florin then it is ok if the other one is!

The awful taste of warm mild.

Not to mention Watney's Red Barrel.
Two and three is about the lowest price I can remember for a pint.
(Along with many others I was in work on Sunday 14th February 1971 converting all the bloody handwritten account ledgers into decimal. What a boring job that was.)
"Give more get change" was the Govt's suggestion for the following day!
  • Thank God they got rid of the new half pence piece. What was the idea of going decimal but having a fractional coin - so you could buy a single Black Jack I suppose?

    Yet you still post.
  • I remember a pint being 1/10d at my football club for Whitbread (almost undrinkable) Trophy.

hang on weren't Black Jacks 4 for a 1d therefore a new halfpenny would have bought you 2?

although I do remember with decimalisation everything seemed to double in price overnight...well sweets did anyway! :(

  • old money sounds so romantic to me, very London 'twang' to it aswell.
