not a genre I'm particularly keen on, but like most genres there's a few gems I like, here are the ones I have in iTunes

Parliament - Flashlight / Tear The Roof Off Sucker
Lowell Fulsom - Tramp
Archie & The Drells - Tighten Up
Zapp & Roger - More Bounce To The Ounce
Isley Brothers - Fight The Power
A Certain Ration - Shack Up
The Clash - Overpowered By Funk

appreciate any more suggestions!

Marvin Gaye - Inner City Blues & What's Goin' On?
Sly & The Family Stone - Everyday People
James Brown - Say it Loud, I'm Black & I'm Proud
Gil Scott Heron - Pieces of a Man
Stevie Wonder - Livin' for the City
Solomon Burke - The night they drove Old Dixie Down
    Isaac Hayes - Shaft
The Four Tops - Am I my Brother's Keeper?
Isley Bros - Fight the Power

You have to have Curtis Mayfield - "Move on Up" and the Isley Brothers "Summer Breeze" in there.

    Roy Ayers. End of..

Wouldn't class him as funk but one of my favourite artists. Seen him loads of times and got practically all his albums. Some of his early vinyl probably worth a few quid now.

In addition to those already mentioned, "It's Your Thing" by The Isley Brothers, "Play That Funky Music" by Wild Cherry and maybe "You Haven't Done Nothin'" by Stevie Wonder

so does funk represent, disco, motown and soul or a genre of its own?

Dunno, I'd say it can overlap all of those. The important thing is the bassist gets to have a lot more fun than normal.

other types of music can be funky, but to me there is a genre of funk in its own right; so Parliament are funk whereas Chic are definitely disco.
