Rotterdam

Alright lifers. I'm off to Rotterdam next week with work, will be there a couple of nights.

I've heard the place is a little run down and not the nicest of European cities. However, can anyone recommend any good bars, restaurants, things to do in the evening?

Thanks

  • This could be rotterdam or anywhere
    Liverpool or rome
    Cause rotterdam is anywhere
    Anywhere alone
  • I loved Rotterdam when I was working near there years back. Lots of clubs, bars, friendly women, all the things a young man (or old man for that matter) needs. I believe that it is now the 'Islamic Capital' of Holland and the city as a whole is not what it was.
The Hague (not Willie) is only a short way away on the train or by car if you'll have one. There would be a better option than Rotterdam. (Still the greatest shipping town in Europe with Europort, Rotterdam is near the mouth of the great river Rhine delta complex).
Great restaurants in the Hague, Indonesian, Chinese, French even Dutch and plenty of lively clubs and bars. If you're asking me for specific names .. not a clue !! .... have fun
  • Thanks Lincs
  • Rotterdam or Moroccodam as the Dutch call it. It's not the best place or safest, a typical port city mixed in with administrative buildings. Lincs is probably right and you would be better going into Den Haag. It will take about 20 minutes by train and the new Metro line is also open. A couple of minutes walk and you are in the centre. While you are over, you have to try the herrings. Delicious !!
Don't live that far away from Rotterdam and do a lot of my work there. Fancy a pint?
  • Have been going out there every year for the last 10 years for a football tour. It has always been safe to my knowlege, never had trouble, even the year we saw ALOT of tooled up skinheads at the station, on the way to a match somewhere first thing on a Sunday morning
For bars, check out Rotown on Nieuwe Binnenweg, about 5-10 mins walk from the central station, there are other nice bars on this street too, and also Falafal king on the junction with the main road, it's great! Then try Witte Aap - Witte de Withstraat 78, bit further out from the city, and in a much more "local" neighbourhood, it was voted best bar in the world in 2009. Then you must try Baha beach club, very near the city centre on Stadhuisplein, there are some good restaurants around here too. It's a friendly very relaxed city, not a huge amount to do in the day time, but comes alive at night.
  • The Dutch love a lager and raving, I'm sure you'll find enough to keep you entertained.

Den Haag is the only place I know where you can walk with a forward tilt of 45 degrees...in short it blows a bit but very bracing. As my friends daughter put it in her best English "It's nice to feel the wond in your fish"
  • Rotterdam's alright, not as bad as people make out (these days). The only thing I can recommend though is the area around Oudehaven, nice setting with bars and restaurants.
  • The casino (next to the Hilton on Weena) offers lots of (risky) entertainment. Live music and great atmosphere on weekends.
