My father (Spurs supporter) had him as his favourite player.

A footballing legend, a fantastic life, one of the true football greats and a legendary name that everyone who cares about the game knows and loves no matter who they support.

RIP, what a legend!0

RIP, true legend, probably will be the only person to ever win an F.A cup while playing with a broken neck. Yet that's not even on the top of his life achievements which says something. What a man.0

RIP - great life he had, I knew he had been a German soldier but I didn't know he had served on the Eastern Front. He was not only lucky to survive that, had he been taken prisoner by the Russians rather than the British that most likely would have been it for him.0

Top man, Bert. Not too many players would play on with a broken neck.
I know we've had our differences, but you have to admire the Germans.0 -

A good goalie and came over as a genuinely nice guy when interviewed in later years on TV.

First Cup Final I ever saw on our brand new bw TV. What a hero, playing on with a broken neck.
Great example to our prima-donnas of today!
Nice to read he did a lot to repair relationships between us and Germany. RIP a great character.0 -
Close for us to Max Schmelling in sporting greatness, though not as close as Schmelling's standing and bravery in Germany. A name up there with Fatty Foulke in legendary status, but very few rate with his class. RIP.
Apparently was taken prisoner by the Soviets, but escaped. Interestingly of german pows around 55% of NCO's survived: up to around 90% of COs. So he had a chance if long term captured.0
