G Hurst is a very famous striker but for Charlton fans the G stands for Gordon not Geoff.
Gordon Hurst was born in Oldham but was serving as a Physical Training Instructor (PTI) with the Royal Marines in Deal when he was picked up by Charlton. The good news came to him when he was in a Margate Chip shop with his wife to be Pat. He got a message that his Sargent Major was waiting for him at home. He got back to find out that The Addicks wanted to sign him.
He went on to play 369 league games from right wing, all but two in the top flight. He still holds the record for most outfield appearances for Charlton in the top flight and is the third highest top flight scorer. His 81 goals in 393 games in total from the wing would impress most even today but at only 5' 9'' would fail the CL height test : - )
His talents were recognised outside of SE7 when he represented the Football League v The League of Ireland in Dublin and when he toured Australia with the FA. He played in all five "tests" and scored five goals.
Oh, and he won the FA Cup too.

Gordon's Shirt, medals and cap have been donated to the Charlton Athletic Museum where there will be on display soon.
Great gesture by the family.
