Projector advice needed

I want to buy a projector and dvd player for my gf's birthday, but I'm finding the jargon about 3D equipment very confusing. The only 3D I've ever seen has been at the cinema where two projectors are used, so need enlightening as to how you can get 3D in colour on a TV/projector.

Any advice greatly appreciated.
