PM thinks there is a saturation of football on TV. So much and the quality often poor.
Talked about his first goal v Norwich. Was exhausted after the celebration. His 21 year old daughter had a go at Facebook because the video credits the goal to Carl Leaburn. One of his U14 players was not responding to PMs coaching. He watched the goal and then gave PM more respect as realised he could do it.
PM said coached U14s at Arsenal for a year. Had Jack Wilshire but can’t claim credit as he was already good. Tried him in different positions but good there too. While at AFC sat with Arnold Murhen from Ajax. Told PM that at Ajax it is about technique not tactics, “just the ball”. CC and PM “abroad they coach for a high level of technique from an early age” CC Here the FA didn’t keep up. At Lillishal about Intellectual crap, you just want to show someone visual how to do it”. CC here in the 70s/80s 60% of team were playing route 1, even Arsenal. Stopped nourishing and developing our own kids “Wrong to think the only way to win is to kick it long into the other hald.
Good English kids can and do come thru but now with help from Foreign players and coaches
PM said on his A licence course was about groups not individuals. Not taught how to coach individuals. Some of his boys bored by work on technique. They just want to bend the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box but as PM says if you haven’t got “that doesn’t matter as you’ll never get that far up the pitch. “Lack of technique even in Prem players is scary”
PM said was playing in reserves at 15. Played against a 40 year old Tommy Hutchinson. Thought he have an easy game but never got a kick. Played reserve games v pros at league grounds, great education.
PM thinks too many players are professional professionals. He doesn’t begrude the money as he knows how injuries can finish you off. Told the story of when he was making a yet another come back from injury and playing in the reserves v Spurs. John Moncur and him were having a bit a battle and Moncur said “you only play for Charlton, I play for Spurs”. PM said “how many games?” Moncur “Five” PM “and how many of them did you start?” “none” PM “I’ve played 150 games in the top flight. So you not really a player then. You don’t actually “play” for Spurs”.
Millwall in the Snow. “just one of those days, I just had fun terrorising people”. After the games got stopped in his car as coming out the ground in his CAFC tracksuit. OB “you looked suspicious when you put that bag in the boot” PM “what this bag with the Charlton badges? It’s a football ground, there’s just been a game, I’m wearing a tracksuit, what do you think is in the bag?”
Leaburn – PM Full of praise for him, best player played with. A mate but has the mind of midfield player. Because so big people expect different things but I could find him with my eyes closed and he would hold the ball up. Once in training with Curbs PM nutmegged AC and then Carlo did the same”. CC Carlo so good with his back to goal, players learnt to play off him. Would make a very good coach but not interested. PM Carlo He had the courage to play, no one else to play striker, not a goal scorer it was the goals he set up. You appreciated what he did when he wasn’t playing.
PM CUrrent players he likes Dale - Did you see that overhead kick pass. Likes Cousins but needs to pass the ball forward more which he can do. Yann is decent if the right pass good feet.
SCP - 6 players short and needs money. "what's killed us is finishing 9th, papered over the cracks and built up expectations. 10 or 12 good players but if a key player is missing then short. No gimmie games so have to be on it all the time and can't buy.
"IF CP leaves someone else would have him" "NEver got the credit he deserved for buying a whole new team, gelling them and then winning the league"
"Cp needs support as not getting it from above. Fans are good and understand the situation" PM hasn't spoken to CP about this just his view.
Asked about loss of Fuller, Obika, Haynes said that is what we are missing "no variation" "They were different types, CP doesn't have that so predictable" "Can't rely on Harriot and Cousins as kids and will be up and down".

Thanks Henry, that's a fascinating read. Morts seems to be an intelligent & switched on guy. His views on the current situation are particularly interesting: "no support from above". This is shameful if true & says everything you need to know about the clueless current owners.
cc spoke about George Best and how fit he was even if he had been drinking the night before. Would always finish 1st in a team race.
cc also told a story about Dennis law and a corner, as the ball comes into the box Dennis Law jumped on to the shoulders of some guy and headed the ball towards the goalie, said that Law could propell himself to great heights literally.

Was one of the best we've had and we've had some good ones. Two people with opinions and who could talk all night.
Will try to get Colin along to a BTTV dinner.
We haven't heard from them since Slater was there!
Thanks for the write up Henry, sounds like it was a good night.

Both really good value and a great night.
