Weren't Wigan supposedly looking at Powell when Martinez left? With a possible takeover leaving the club in limbo, a record that reads one title and a 9th place finish in the first year up a league, and his contract gently running down Whelan would be mad not to look at him. Here's hoping Whelan's a daft as he seems
Wigan fans have classic "relegation" syndrome, we had the same thing in 07/08 under Pardew.
That is to say, you have spent seven years in the top-flight and getting some good results against the giants of the English game and suddenly you're getting bossed at home by Derby County and other assorted herberts and you think it should not be happening.
Problem is that its XI vs XI out there and you don't get any points on reputation or because you are supposedly 'on loan' to the Championship, you have to earn every point you get.
Would not surprise me if Wigan went into a death spiral, expectations are too high among the fans - they are a very small club in reality that has prospered on the back of Whelan's generosity - and bloody good luck to the bloke.
I still can't fathom out how he continues to be linked with jobs. This is his record:
West brom (caretaker boss) - in his only game they let a 3-0 lead slip to draw 3-3 Portsmouth - relegated. 25% win record Blackpool - 12 games in charge, won 2. Blackburn - 15 games in charge, won 4.
Same here, he has to be the worst possible candidate but keeps getting jobs and probably bloody good pay-offs for being a useless, incompetent manager. It is a mystery how he keeps getting in there.

Well regarded coach. Will possibly have the current England manager providing a reference. Not sure he has picked the best teams to manage so far, and not convinced accepting the Barnsley job (if offered) would be in his best interests.

Surely the above applies to a lot of 'managers' at the moment, all those that have just been sacked will be back on the merry go round getting employed by another 'no nothing' Chairman.
again .. no surprise .. he was a bad appointment, a reasonable success at Burnley, a failure at Bolton, a total managerial contrast to Martinez, Whelan got this one very wrong .. Wigan could be slipping back from whence they came, the North West Counties Division Six (:>) (only joking, but Martinez had the club punching well above its weight, mid championship table is Wigan's true level)
