Although Fulham are absolutely shocking at the moment and Benty looks a spent force, he's still got a few years left in him if he gets fit, at the right club, with the right manager, in a team playing to his strengths. He was always one of those that responded better to the arm around the shoulder treatment if I remember rightly and a new boss just might kick start things for him.
Shame that he's so badly out of form going into a World Cup year too.
He was a star at Sunderland going villa was a mistake. He needs to be the main man at a club that's how he is appreciated. Perhaps a similar forward characteristic to Torres.
Sometimes players quality is temperamental and bent just simply hasn't got it anymore. This trait is mostly found in strikers...they lose it and in most cases, it's permanently.
I would still have him back at Charlton...he would not be able to admit to himself that it might be a good idea to step down a league, he will always want to challenge himself in the premier league.
Think Ronay was saying more than just that he was "lazy". He was describing a player who has clearly lost his mojo. There was a graphic on Sky or MOTD, can't remember which. It showed that Bent had just ten touches in the opposition's half and only one of those was in the box. However bad the service to him, that suggests a player who had pretty much given up in the way Ronay decribes.
He is only human I think he has been demotivated by a succession of manager who should have kept their mouths shut Chris would soon bring out the best in him .
He's always been a player that you have to use the right way - Curbs seemed to crack it, but a lot of the others haven't. Give him crosses or a ball over the top and he'll do it for ya. If you don't play that way, don't sign him. I haven't followed Benty that closely since he left us, but I wouldn't mind betting thats a lot of the trouble.
In a similar vein, there's a piece in todays paper about Spurs' latest striker, they are saying that the way AVB set's up his wingers, he'll never get anything to attack.
This is spot on - we assume managers know more than us, in a lot of aspects they do - but I do believe that a fan who has been watching football for over 40 years will know things that many managers don't. There is an elitism in the game so that concept ins't fully considered. Basically, it is clear that some players need the team playing to their strengths. Sometimes it is down to the manager not being th eone who decided to buy the player and being wedded to his systems.
One thing that has impressed me about Chrissy is that he has tried to look for a system that suits the players he has - admittedly with varying degrees of success. A lot of managers don't do this though!
If he HAS lost the hunger then dropping to the Championship might not be out of the question
On the other hand though, if he's lost the hunger playing for a premier league side, why would he be any more motivated dropping down a league and turning out against the likes of Yeovil and Barnsley?
Just missed an open goal for Fulham. Koscielny was putting him under pressure, but he should have done much better.
...awful miss from Benty but not as dreadful as Carlton Cole's yesterday.
Really thought Bent would find his form this year going into his last chance of a World Cup squad but he has been a shadow of his former self. Sad really.
I don't think I could stand to see him come here and fail and get the kind of dog's abuse that JFH got. Deservedly or not. I prefer to remember him dancing around defenders and sneaking the ball into the net in those wonderful first games of his first season with us. It seems to me that he would be another case of a slowish goal-hanger dropping down a division, not getting the service he needs and ultimately just taking a place where we need someone that can collect the ball up the pitch and create opportunities for himself and his team-mates. Fuller he ain't.
darren bent slowish. Compared to who? A 70% fit darren bent would still smash the championship but is never going.to.drop down
He did the business for a full 2 seasons.
Yeh he DID. Seen MOTD recently? Aside from sentiment why would we think he would be different from any other premiership player who has lost his touch, dropped down and disappoints? If he came I'd be hopeful, but wouldn't be surprised if he did nothing much for us. We don't have the midfield service for a player like Bent. As I said, he doesn't really create his own chances, and no-one else at Charlton is going to do it, that's for sure.
I remember bents workrate for us being off the charts - lone striker basically charging down the oppo back four all game. Whenever I seen him since he left us he seems to have lost that either through instruction or just lack of desire.
He was never a skillful footballer but he was all about the speed and finishing. Could turn it round like he did when he joined Sunderland but then again I doubt it now - will just be happy with his millions sadly.
Poyet said Bent was one of the most dimwitted footballers around. Not in general life, just on the pitch. He'll never adapt his game with age, but his eye for goal will come back with an extended run IMO.
Said to be furious at being left on the bench yesterday for an untried youngster. Should CP be on the phone to A Villa offering to take over his loan until the end of the season? I think it would be the perfect signing for us and for Bent. It would give us a huge boost and may well get Darrens career up and running again. I'm sure he'd love to help us out and resume his Charlton hero status. The cost involved would be more than recouped if he helped save us from the drop.

personally, i am also concious of the need for a CF to be more than a poacher in this team but bent is too good for the championship and would walk it
