What kids want for Christmas.

My daughter teaches at a local primary school and for the second year running I was talked into being Santa for an afternoon. I was assured this was not because of any physical similarities between myself and the great man but purely for my interrogational skills in regard to Christmas presents. I did note however that my wife advised the woman in the fancy dress shop that the false belly would not be required for my Santa outfit. So it was off to the school yesterday to do some Ho, Ho, Ho-ing.

After running through the reindeer's names and telling them to leave out carrots for Rudolph and Co. and mince pies and their dad's whisky for me we got to the big question. Out of around 90 youngsters Batman stuff was the most popular with the boys and Barbie/My little pony with the girls. These were followed by skateboards, star wars stuff, Lego, and bicycles. Only one football shirt (Spurs) and, surprisingly, only one I-pad (though most of them seem to have I-phones already, even the 5-year olds). There were also 2 boomerangs, a rocking horse, and a hamster. Chocolate fountains were popular but there was only one request for a mouse (white please Santa). It was a good afternoon and interesting to see that most of them still 'believe' though personally I was disappointed that neither Hornby Dublo or Dinky Toys got a mention though one lad asked for a real racing car: I could have trouble getting that down the chimney!

I asked my 21/2 year old boy whats he is going to ask santa for, he said a bbq. wtf

that's fair enough for someone in their 20's

  • My 5 year old wants a magic rainbow wand. We think it's from a Disney Princess programme but they don't actually make/sell them. I've got something a bit like it from Amazon but think she may be dissapointed. Luckily, she's still buzzing about the cats we got her for her birthday the other week.

    BBQ ! classic.

    I reckon you'd make a great Santa @March51

One of my boys has asked for skittles. My dad taught him to line up all his toy men on a table and knock them over with a rolling ball ten-pin bowling style. He now plays this for about 4 hours a day. Skittles is the next step up, and i reckon by next xmas he'll be asking for a bowling alley or a specialist ball and towel.

Hello B, no, though one or two were very quiet and spoke in whispers. They all got a present of that bubble blowing stuff which cheered them up though. I brought one home and drove our cats potty as they chased the bubbles around last night.

  • 6 yr old wants an ipod touch WTF !!!....3 yr old wants anything Disney/Peppa Pig
  • Saw this yesterday and can confirm it's pretty much spot on.

  • My 2 year old asked for an I-pad.

Wife told her we already have one which she dominates the use of (Peppa Pig)

To which 2 year old says that I-pad is Mummy's and she needs her own

My 7 year old wants some darts and a trip to Bolton on Saturday (weirdo)
  • I've gone down the iPad mini route for my 7yo daughter this Christmas after much umming and arrring.

I have to say, as a single Dad, I find the whole Christmas shopping process traumatic to say the least. After 7 years, I still dont know what the hell to buy. I think 7 is one of them really awkward ages to buy for, as they're beyond the likes of Peppa Pig, Dora the Explorer, Disney Princesses and stuff like that...but then they're still maybe too young for other stuff. It doesnt help as she's got two families buying for her, she's got almost everything a kid could ever wish for.

With that in mind, I asked her that if she could have a choice of one big single present or a load of smaller presents, what would she like? She said one present. Odds on her having a tantrum on Boxing Day when she realises she's only got one present???...

I hope the first isn't for use at the second : - )

  • nope , he's getting prepared for millwall away !
  • my 15 yo old keeps dropping hints about an iPad.

I've told him to buy one for himself with the money he'll get off the in-laws etc.
  • Bought ten year old step-daughter a Galaxy tablet last year and thought it was ridiculously expensive, but its barely left her hands since so I reckon its money well spent - and we now get to use the lap top! This year all she has asked for is anything covered in One direction and (weirdly) a Rubiks Cube!

I was a bit of geek with the Rubik's Cube when I was younger and still have one on my desk to this day. There are some great web sites and you tube videos these days to teach you how to solve it. There are many people that can, consistently, solve it in under 15 seconds. It's a great way for kids to practice memory skills, and I have yet to meet anyone that is not impressed when you can just solve one.
  • My 9 year old wants Lego, Doctor Who Sonic Screwdrivers and outrageously rare Yu-Gi-Oh cards.

His Mum has bought him a PS4 - which I think is to compensate for running off and leaving us, and to incentivise him to want to go to her flat to play with it. She tells me that he will not be allowed to bring it home, even though he only goes over there for half a day a week - she is too busy to give him any more of her precious time.

Something tells me I will be buying a PS4 in January. Thanks Mrs KHA!

Web sites and you tube videos??? She will have it solved by Christmas day tea time then! Guess the days of carefully peeling the stickers off and the putting them back on to complete the cube have gone then!

  • That's a lovely thing to do March! Sounds like everyone had a great time. Maybe it's their age but it's great to see they wanted proper toys mostly too rather than computer games which seems the default these days.

Fortunately, having the build of a racing snake myself I'm some way off being asked to play Santa...ahem, cough, cough.

I remember being given a tatty sheet of paper (that had been subject to about a 1000 photocopies) with a long list of instructions on it for the cube. Took me a few days to remember the lot but got there in the end and could solve it comfortably inside 20 secs.

The other day I forgot my postcode... :'(
  • Great to see you're up and about March. Have a great Xmas.

Are you sure this shouldn't be on the unusual surgery thread? ;-)
  • well said CE
  • My 12 yr old daughter wants the new iPad air and my 8yr old sons wants a new 100cc quad bike

Thanks folks. Have managed a few games and even saw us win one! Jimmy85 has to do some commentating when the action's down the Jimmy Seed end but it's just magic to be there at all. So thank you again and have a great time yourselves.

  • My little boy will probably be the only kid in Canada to find a Charlton Athletic 2014 Calendar under the tree on Christmas Morning. Feel a bit sorry for him, he is absolutely mad about football - thats all he thinks & talks about it seems - but all his mates are into ice hockey.

Like kids do, he supports multiple teams - Charlton of course - but also Yeovil, Chesterfield & Atalanta - the power of FIFA 2014 I guess.

I hope the pictures on this years calendar are of something other than the players given that 90% of them are out of contract in June !
