I see why people liked him, but to be fair he's like a cross between Harry Redknapp and Paolo Di Canio, only from oop North. Don't think he';d be very successful in modern football.
Can't deny the success he had and that his methods worked, however I was never a fan, he was a massive egotist and always saw himself as bigger than the club / players / support team.
Yep...and that audience...wot a bunch of hacks. No doubt some of em are running our media these days.
my favorite clough line is
"I wouldnt say i am the best manager in the world but i am definitley in the top 1"
i rate him for;
1. Passing football 2 no lip and very little dirty play from his team 3. The.vigilante punch on the pitch invader 4. Being one of the few advocates for socialism during the early thatcher days 5. Goals to games ratio for sunderland and middlesboro and having his leg brokern sadly forced to retire
i think he was out of order in respect of; 1. Justin fashanu 2. The vigilante punch on the pitch invader 3. alcoholism
on balance...the justin fashanu affair (no wonder the poor fella topped himself...even on that youtube clip the are still digging him out on national tele) is the most important and taints it for me

Agree about his treatment of Fashanu but that was a different time altogether back in 1981 when he played for Forest, back in those days very, very few gay people were out at all let alone in the macho world of football.
To blokes like Clough - raised in the post-war years - the whole idea of a gay bloke in football would have been utterly ludicrous.
Thankfully more enlightened attitudes are around now but it's important to remember that Clough - despite his poor treatment of Fashanu - had some great qualities too, most notably the fact that he insisted his players treat match officials with total respect.

Great character but don't think he's last 5 minutes in the modern game with some if his, erm, forthright views.
