David Campbell (not to be confused with the Norn Iron international we signed from Forest in the 80s)

    Two David Campbells

    There's only two David Campbells
  • Tommy Brown

I went to school with his son

A real name from the past he was I believe Scotlands youngest international (could be wartime ? )

I recall MacLeod who was brought in as cover but ultimately proved to be totally ineffective.

In Jimmy Seeds book he rated Tommy his worst ever buy.
Good player but didn't fit the system.

What I find fascinating is that some of our better Scots,Wright,Duff,Duffy,Reid,McLaughlin,Alan Campbell,Melrose and Walsh (although he made the bench once) were all uncapped and some of our more recent less celebrated Scots did get to wear the blue jersey.

My attempt at a Charlton Scottish 11

Charlie Wright , John Hewie , Mark Reid , Michael Stewart , Joe McLaughlin , Christian Dailly ,Alan Campbell, Jim Melrose , Chris Iwelumo , Colin Walsh . Chris Duffy Subs Willie Duff , Graeme Murty ,Stuart Balmer ,Jay Mceverley ,Andy Gray , John Hendry ,Ralph Milne

Maybe he doesn't qualify. Berwick just over 2 miles from Scottish border.

I thought Roy Matthews was English.

  • As far as I remember he was Scottish. I will try to check it out.
  • I stand corrected he was born in Slough - I suppose it is quite near the Scottish Border!

I have a feeling he came to us originally from Arbroath though which could be why you thought he was Scottish.
  • Yeah that's what threw me. Thanks Len

at a guess and as his middle name is Henderson, Roy's parents were Scots .. and also he came to us via Scottish junior football .. (thank you Wiki)

Didn't he take out a Turkish murderer in a match on tour once?

I assume Len this was on the 1949 tour of Turkey where Bert Johnson refused to play on a sunday due to religious beliefs . Another scot was Eddie Marsh who was understudy to Sam Bartram in the 1940/50s .

Surprised that Eddie was Scottish born. I thought he came from the Belvedere area

Eddies dad was also a pro goalkeeper who I think was playing in scotland when eddie was born.Colin Cameron lists him as born in dundee & moveing to Hillington at 10 years of age although the rothmans book says he was born in London . Your memory is correct about the Belvedere connection as J Seed signed him from Erith & Belvedere in 1945 .

  • John MacDonald

Three games on loan from Rangers in 1986/87, where he even partnered Melrose upfront in the memorable 3-2 win over Everton.
