I.think stuart would have beaten sturgess in a 100m dash but he was such a dosy player he was always a half second behind the play so he used to get roasted

Maybe Jamie Stuart was feeling a bit, ahem, mellow on the pitch...
I'm sorry but clearly there aren't enough of us on here "of a certain age" because how 'arry Boy doesn't get one of the central midfield slots is beyond me!
He had the turning circle of a London bus a long time before he left Millwall to finish his career with us and the change in scenery certainly didn't improve his lack of pace!
Darren Pitcher was not very quick if I remember. Recall him tracking back when we played Everton at Selhurst and got left behind by the entire team which led to an Everton goal. I'm sure we lost 2-0 in that game.
Talking of players like Maurice Setters, he was well into his 30s when he came to Charlton.
Reading the thread, a lot of posters have commented how slow some players were, but many of them were already well into their 30s and coming towards the end of long careers.
Remember young John Barnes ripping up top tier defences for fun playing for Liverpool - or the stunning solo wonder goal scored for England dribbling through the Brazil defence ? ...... compared with the tubby 35 year old playing for Charlton who was rarely able to move out of the centre circle.
FACT: very few players are as quick in their mid thirties compared to their younger prime. Obviously.

Only played for us for a few games right at the end of his career.
By then he had already played more than 350 games in the top tier for 15 years, including more than 150 appearances for Man Utd under Matt Busby.
