When you think about it, the likes of Brian Clough would have wheeled and dealed if they had no money to spend, whereas we seem to have stuck with the same players for the past 3 seasons - maybe its time for us not to be so parochial, and look outside for inspiration and to move forward.
Maybe that time is now.
No fucking pleasing some of our fans
I am not gratefully to CP or the board for us winning the 3rd tier league when we should not have been there in the first place
Some of our fans are to easily fucking pleased
And if you truly cannot express gratitude to Chris Powell and
HIS squad made up of
HIS signings coached by
HIS staff
for hauling us out of the third tier of English football when previously we were only heading further into the abyss, then I'm not sure it's worth bothering to give a more in depth answer.
Yes, won the league with over 100 points, records goals.etc.etc - cant argue with that...
However, from January of that year (around the time Kermy became a regular) we played Hoofball - full stop. It was shit but effective in a crap league. But it dont work in the Champs - you get sussed a lot more easier, but CP hasnt changd the style to accommodate accordingly. The only reason we got to 9th last season was because other teams took their foot off the pedal - of what i recall, we were still looking behind us at relegation til about 2/3 weeks before end of season.1 -

Makes me cringe. People are now trying to hound a very decent man who has no support from the board who has already proved beyond doubt he can produce winning football when given the tools to do so. I expect you will be happy when we get in a foreign coach that knows nor cares eff all about CAFC or The championship or the supporters unlike Chris Powell. Be careful what you wish for.21

Not too sure about this. Loyalty to first Pritchard and now Church and JJ will be his downfall. JJ is more effective coming off the bench when others are tiring towards the end giving him a level playing field...
Waiting till 70+ minute to make subs indicates a level of indecision... Powell is still learning the ropes and I hope he gets the time to get things together but think that the outlook for him is bleak unless Murray has RD's ear...1 -
No! It's because he was the director on the board responsible for player contracts, managing to sign every decent first team player under 24 on a long term deal - that's Harriott, Piggott, Solly and Cousins. He would therefore have a view on the squad and management which I understand is fairly positive about Chris Powell.Airman Brown said:

A chance conversation with someone who knows him plus a few other things tells me that Martin Prothero will tell it how we see it, namely give Powell the playing resources (and pitch) and he will dig us out of the bottom five.
Also he appears to get on well with Richard Murray who held a 10% holding in the club and is now chair. They will advise as to what is right in the immediate future.

But surely Protheroe wouldn't have known which players to offer long term deals to, he would have taken CP's advice on that. Would you, as the new owner, take advice from someone you have barely known for ten minutes? It's the same as those saying Roland's first priority must be to offer CP a new deal. Why? He barely knows CP from Adam. Any sane person would wait and see how he performs, if so inclined.
Personally I think RD has a plan, that plan was in place before he took over, and very shortly we will find out exactly what that plan is. Unfortunately I don't think CP will be part of it.
Although responding to your post none of the above is aimed at you SR.0 -

Me too. Fully behind Powell - the poor bloke just needs the right level of support. I think this team is 3-4 players short of being challengers for promotion, but with no budget this season SCP has had no chance to push on. When he was given the backing, he ran away with the league. Since then he's had nothing - I hope very much RD sticks with him and allows him the opportunity to build on the current squad.crookester said:

No problem! What I meant to add is that clearly RD is his own man and we have no idea whether he will act on advice from the directors who have brought the club this far. But it makes sense that he will engage and listen.LargeAddick said:But surely Protheroe wouldn't have known which players to offer long term deals to, he would have taken CP's advice on that. Part of his plan has to be to ensure survival in the Championship so getting a decent striker in seems obvious to all to get some momentum going. Powells best course of action is to get a result at Oxford and build some momentum. More on the cup later

I am conerned that a lot of comments point to our lack of success as being down to not having a decent striker. From all the match threads and match reports I have followed, I do not hear that we created chance after chance for our strikers to score and they have wasted them. However good a striker we buy or get in on loan he will not score without some kind of half-decent service. We need to work out how we can develop our game from a mean defence into an efficient passing/attacking force which can provide chances for forwards to score. Often Kermogant has to turn himself inside out to construct a shot from the rare crosses that come at him to have any chance of a shot on goal. The tactic of hoofball presents a more than 50/50 chance of a defence regaining immediate possession of the ball. And how many goals, shots or near misses have been created from someone running on to a flick on? Coaching our players on build up play in the final third will hopefully present more chances for our existing forwards to score. A lone, new, super-duper striker will not suddenly start hitting the back of the net by himself.4

The difference is Watford are actually linked to some decent sides. Yes Standard are top of their league, yes, Belgium are doing well as a national side, but has anyone actually seen their league? Its lower championship/ upper league 1 at best once you take out the top 2 or 3. Watford are tied in with a good Italian club in Udinese, so players who struggle to get a game in Serie A should be a darn sight better than those in the Belgian league. Powell leaving is my biggest concern, he holds the team together. At times he makes, mistakes but he's still a young manager and has been working with his hands tied behind his back...The_President said:If we do go down the Watford route, what has been the Watford fans reaction to the past 2 seasons? maybe the Hornet fan who comes on here can give us his opinion.

If you think about the difference between this season and last season, it's very different in league position and outlook but when you look at the team and squad we still have most of the same players. Except we appear to have replaced Fuller and Haynes with Church and Piggott. And with Solly out at least half the time Wilson is dropping back to right back. Oh and Harriott was on fire at the end of last season then dropped this time around.Tunwellsaddick said:I am conerned that a lot of comments point to our lack of success as being down to not having a decent striker. So get Harriott on track, Solly on the pitch and/or find loan cover and replace Fuller with an adequate replacement please...
And one more thing - in Stephens and Cousins we have the best central midfield pairing I have seen in years. In theory we should be winning a lot of of games by the odd goal instead of losing 1-0 every week but it needs someone to put the ball away. The margins are narrow in this league and Powell should be given a chance to turn this around by signing a decent striker. By all means better football with a four or five man midfield playing a passing game - we have the players for that if Wilson isn't pushed back to right back and Harriott is on his game.

From my perspective, I would be gutted if we lose Powell. I have only seen great squad building qualities from him. I have, and have commented on in the past on what I see as his weaknesses, but that's how you learn and I have never wanted him gone. I think the Palace away defeat last season was his fault and he can take too long to make the changes and when he does he could go further quicker IMO. But, I believe, as a board that you have to invest time, patience and some money in him and then you will get the dividends. If we had a quality striker we would be in an around the play offs, but Chrissy got the team to a level where it was ready to push on and had the rug pulled away. The lack of a decent striker has distorted the great skill that has gone into developing a good squad without massive financial support.
With the current squad, Chrissy is the glue that binds it together - and at this stage of the season, replacing him would lead to relegation most probably.4 -
