Hey, Sheffield United fan here. Thought I'd share some of my views on us, you and how I see the match turning out on Sunday.

Our Recent Run: There's no denying that 8 wins on the bounce is filling the squad with confidence, something we lacked earlier on in the season. The 2-0 win last night was with an obviously weakened squad with 5/6 people missing who are likely to play against you on Sunday and winning with that squad makes it seem like we're going to be very hard to beat at this moment in time. We've also been playing a good game whilst winning; we don't always play the prettiest football but the players in our squad such as scougall with his amazing burst of pace and Murphy & Flynn on the wings have been creating great links in the team and terrorizing defenses.

Our squad and key players:

John Brayford - Right back who we have on loan from Cardiff, been amazing and good at getting forward - Doubt for Sunday and would be a BIG miss if he's injured.
Stefan Scougall - He's got an unreal burst of pace, like a car that can go from 0-60 in under a second. He can easily beat several men at once just because of his pace (also got a decent finish, check out his goal VS MK Dons the other day)
Jamie Murphy/ Ryan Flynn - Our left mid and our right mid, more wingers if I'm honest. They've been outstanding recently and have been taking on any defender in their way; especially Murphy who is much better than flynn and taking on a man and he has nice pace when running with the ball. (Both scored against Aston Villa by cutting inside so you better watch out for that)
Chris Porter - "We're on the pitch if porter scores" was first sung against Fulham but he didn't score, when he scored 2 against forest in injury time we had to invade the pitch! Porter isn't a great player and since we signed him from Derby he's never really reached good form and his time at Derby was riddled with injurys however he's become a super sub scoring against Forest, Colchester and last night peterborough no earlier than the 87th minute. He's also calm on the penalty spot so your defenders better be careful with Murphy and Flynn cutting into the box!

I also must mention Mark Howard, he's only conceded 1 goal since replacing George long in Net against fulham. Conceding 1 in 8 with a strong back 4 will make us hard to break down.

How the game will go: If we score first then we'll defend like you have never seen before, against Peterborough last night we must have spent most of the 2nd half without leaving our own half and they had numerous corners yet they didn't have a shot on target. If you score first then we'll attack much more and in all honesty I see us having more chance of winning if you score first as if we get a goal we could get 3 !

Am I confident? No.
As good as we are at the moment, We're Sheffield United.

1993: Lost FA Cup Semi to Sheff Wedn**day
1997: lost play off final
2003: Lost play off final, FA Cup semi final AND League Cup Semi
2009: Another play off final....
2012: You were champions and we finished 3rd after f*cking up an almost certain promotion to the one and only sheff wed***day and then LOST A PLAY OFF FINAL!!

Basically throughout our history we've always bottled it however Clough seems like a manager for the big occasions so.. you never know - We might even see you in the Championship next season!

Best of luck for Sunday, may the team who wants it most win :)
and credit for selling out so quickly considering the 12pm kick off - thanks BT. (You would have had more tickets but South Yorks police have had issues with united fans in years gone by so segregation is always at the max. we don't help it though - some plonker threw a smoke bomb at the notts forest fans when we scored)

Forgot to add, I watched you against Sheffield wendy and you both looked awful. Is that how you always play?

Right, 5-0 to us then :D
  • On what side does Murphy play?
  • On what side does Murphy play?

Left, but on the odd occassion him and Flynn switch. Flynn is a bit more defensive minded whereas murphy is more attacking and can even play as a striker if needed.

Whoever plays on the right won't get much joy out of Wiggins. On the left you might get a bit more, as our RB is not really a RB. Solly our POTY is out for the season.
  • We will play to win rather than entertain. Most people complain about one thing or another when we beat them and I'm sure you'll be no exception. If we score, we'll go a bit more defensive. Pace not really an issue for our defence - we are more often undone by quick skilful passing or lack of concentration on our part.

I am expecting a tight game with only one goal in it. I don't think your best chance will be for us to score first - it will probably be for you to score first in all honesty.

    fixed for you VG.

League one and the championship are miles apart so I'm not too worried about your recent form. The game is set up really nicely, I just hope we go for it. If we sit back we'll be in trouble.

Who will be in if Brayford's injured?

  • Nice write up thanks.

At least you seem to get to the semis + finals so it is probably next round that you stuff it up.

    Fully expecting Blades 2-0 Addicks

After beating Villa, Forest and Fulham I don't think there's that much difference between high L1 and championship (Villa and Fulham were of championship quality, not PL) I also hope that you go for it because we can be deadly on the counter attack

If Brayford is injured we have no RB, it will have to be Davies again who is our spare right mid.

Alternatively as we did against Gillingham we could play 3 at the back with Flynn and our left back Harris as wing backs but think thats too risky against you.

I think there is a fair bit of difference - having seen both leagues at close quarters! I don't think Villa or Fulham took you, or maybe the competition, seriously enough in all honesty.

Sadly Cup matches are closest we get to seeing championship football

That was one of our better performances!!
  • However, we are not high Championship, and you are probably as strong as any League One club at the moment so it is going to be a tight game.

Its the cup, It's all about who is wearing the most lucky socks, and lucky pants.
  • Fact is we don't have many good players, so we tend to play with the basis of a strong defence. Powell isn't too fussed about the final third. When we're ahead we tend to sit back and try and absorb the pressure for the rest of the game. When it comes off opposition supporters tear their hair out and say we're shit and when we fluff it up we tear our hair out asking why Powell doesn't attack.

I learned recently that in sport the teams with the best defence are, statistically, the ones who win the most matches... go figure.
  • I think Church is high League One standard - Harriot could pose a lot of problems. We need to put the not many good players in context. I reckon, Hamer, Wiggins, Wilson, Morro, Wood, Dervitte, Poyet, Cousins, AA, Harriot, Church, Reza, Sordell, Tudgay would walk into any League One team.

  • Don't like the idea of Tudgay playing against us http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzfQcQp7C5c

What smash them for 20mins, get a goal and then see out the win? Yeah exactly what we didn't want to see in a tough away game. Dire stuff. Did you watch the first 20minutes? The game was settled by our start, Weds couldn't get the ball.
haha actually I didn't I decided to put it on a stream after you had scored (I'd had enough of listening to bbc radio sheffield) but from what I did see you were nothing special.
  • I suspect he'll be on the bench - Church will be on his own upfront to start with.

That'll be why, the first 20 or so was our game, after that Sheff Weds got a foothold in the game making it a scrappy midfield battle, we were away from home and leading the match, I expect a tighter game vs you's, low score draw or 1-0 either way, 2-0 if numbers are pushed up to try for an equaliser and countered
  • One of the best self-assessments i've seen on this forum from an opposition supporter, so kudos for that.

As others have said, reckon this will be a really close game. Looking forward to Sunday so much, see you in the stands, can see it going to replay tbh.
  • If you think our game V's the wendys wasn't that good, you should see our league games. Really looking forward to this one, but not overly confident.

Also my first visit to your ground, always seemed to fall at a time I couldn't make it whenever I've fancied going in the past..................

In fairness you'd have a completely different opinion of us had you seen the whole game. First 20-25 minutes there was only one team in it, Wednesday didn't have a kick and we could've been 2 or 3 up. But yeah i agree if you only watched the last hour you'd say we were both poor.
