I'm sure the words were just used for alliterative effect with no racial undertone but these days such a phrase is always going to be picked up on.
Beat me to it. Alliteration was my first thought.
If I'm listening on the radio, to a low level football match I want a discription of the players involved. Did Motson need to ? Maybe not, is it offensive, No.
If Paul Mortimer or Jason Roberts comes on TV and said they were offended, I will have a rethink,
Ok I know who Tom Elliott is, as he's the guy who scored against Charlton at the valley playing for Wimbledon. I'm sure when telling my Brother about the game I used the same words as Motty ? I better tell my Black friends in Brixton that I read and perform spoken word and Poetry with, that I have been outed as a racist.
The big worry is, we will reach a stage soon when Black, white, mixed race, Chinese, Indian, etc won't be mentioned when giving descriptions of persons of interest to the police. Seems far fetched but we are tying ourselves in knots over being 100% PC.
Let common sense prevail and get rid of the bigots in society.
I heard that game. That comment aside, Motty was certainly having a bad day at the office. He forgot a lot of players' names, as well as that of his co-presenter, and Alvin Martin had to keep correcting him on what was happening on the pitch.
His stints with Hawksbee and Jacobs where he reviews the weekend's football are really good however.
I mean, it's an unnecessary comment, sure. We wouldn't hear a white player described as "white". It's a bit, erm, "ooh he's a different colour to the norm", I guess.
But literally no one is offended by this. It's Motty. He's old, and was obviously going for alliteration, and should have gone with "bold" (or any number of alternatives).
Should he have said it? No.
Is anyone actually offended? Not really - and if they are... Oh, come on. Get over it. Motty is demonstrably not racist.
This isn't an issue, even to lefty liberal snowflakes like me.
The late John White of Tottenham Hotspur was often described as white

Calling him old is ageist.
With you on that one ;-)
On a serious note it seems okay to routinely insult old people in our society. I was surprised when working in the NHS by the attitude of a lot of the staff towards the elderly.
Ageism remains a massive problem but there seems little desire to address it. A lot of institutions talk about diversity but seem happy to treat the elderly and disabled with little respect.
Fair play Charlton Life, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how sensible and understanding most comments have been. The ‘what a disgusting racist, he should be struck off, I’m so anti racist I wouldn’t have been noticed what colour Elliott was myself’ comments have been few and far between. Let’s hope it’s a sign of things to come.
He said “I would be offended too if someone described me as an alcoholic liquid.”
Now an ‘alcoholic liquid’ could be, as you said, a liquid with alcohol in it, but you could also see the words as meaning a liquid that is also an alcoholic.
Which is is why I wrote “How can a liquid be an alcoholic?”

Well I thought it was funny. Briefly :-)
No you didn't.
(Is this a thirty minute argument or did you pay for the full hour?)
It's easier for people like me who spend all their life on the internet and realise that you have to tread carefully these days.
However, the the poor sods who don't, get accused of racism, for an innocent comment that the savvy now recognise is not necessary and may cause offence.
It's not easy for the older generation to keep up.
Referring to someone as coloured uses to be considered as respectful, now you are branded a racist if you haven't kept up with how people want to be described.
Mind you I'm not even certain of this as it appears to be ok to talk about people of colour (confident I hear a lot of actors saying this). but not coloured ?
I think we perhaps need a definitive list updated daily as to what is and what is not acceptable wording.
NB I wonder if anyone questions whether Motty is being bullied ?
What's people's views on films and film titles such as -
White Men Can't Jump? White Chicks (2 male black actors, "whitening up" to be a couple of white women)?
It doesn't bother me on iota, but just wandered what others opinions are?
Cheers
It’s about whether you’re a minority or not. Minorities historically have needed protection whereas majorities haven’t. It’s not about rampant ‘PC shit’ @Goonerhater
Didn't Motty commentate for Radio Five Live on our match on Chelsea's beach? Certainly an away game to them which we lost anyway. We were in the car trying to follow it. I remember getting so frustrated by his inability to describe for listeners what was happening that I texted R5L.
He's still a national treasure and I'm with @PaddyP17 and @soapboxsam on this incident.

This morning on LBC during a phone in discussion on the lack of Black/Asian/Chinese/Mixed race (any 'non white') Metropolitan Police officers .. conversation started thus .. 'and Mike in Durham .. good morning again Mike' .. 'morning Nick, this is your Big Black ex copper in Durham' .. UNQUOTE .. Motty has a LOT to answer for ((:>)

The real question here should be... Is water wet?
(Is this a thirty minute argument or did you pay for the full hour?)
It would certainly lower my weekly consumption figures if it turns out that a nice 6% abv craft ale isn't alcoholic.
