With most Charlton fans driving frantically around South London trying to find a pub with a working stream, Chris Powell’s men surprised most by pulling off a fantastic away victory in this re-arranged Monday night fixture.
In front of a large and intimidating Hillsborough turnout, Charlton controlled the game right from the start with some excellent football, and was no surprise when Callum Harriott smashed home on 22 mins.
In the 2nd half, Wednesday raised the pressure, and when Leon Best equalised on 57 mins, most expected this game to go one way. But Charlton fought back, regained the lead through Simon Church’s elbow, and somehow withheld a barrage of late aerial pressure to hold on.
All very un-Charlton, cue huge celebrations in backstreet South London pubs, the Hillsborough away end, and its crossbar.
