Most improved player of the season...

DD by a mile for me. Thought he looked a bit of a liability in a couple of games last season and was getting beaten too easily but he's come on leaps and bounds. More assured on the ball than Morro and has improved his positional play - really hope we keep him.

    But diego hasnt improved. He just came straight into the side and showed how good he is.

    Going to be a bit controversial. One of the most disappointing aspects of the last three years has been the lack of player development. The recruitment drive in the Summer of 2011 included what appeared to be a very attractive mix of experienced players (Matt Taylor and Danny Hollands, for example) and younger players with potential (Wiggins, Green, Smith, Bover, Pritchard etc.). However, very few players appear to have improved materially during this period.

    Diego Poyet is the stand out this season, but his performances beg the question why he wasn't playing sooner. Was he not ready back in August/September? I agree that Dervite has looked very good since Riga decided to play him ahead of Wood. Jordan Cousins, like Poyet, appeared ready as soon as he got the chance and he has been an automatic choice since. Could he have played sooner?

    It makes you wonder what has been going on. If we are to survive and succeed going forward we'll need better player development, more decisive judgement about their capabilities and, perhaps, more courage in giving young players their chance.

    Wilson. I think Cousins has been found out a bit lately. Poyet's hasn't changed.

    Really pleased for the progress he has made, he's also the answer to our right midfield problems, if only Solly had two good knees.

    Wilson for me. Cousins and Poyet have come in and been fantastic but are not in the 'improved' category as they had nothing from last season to improve on.

    No coincidence that he wasn't allowed to appear in TJ's regime but has been under RD. Financial implications that's all.

    The player who improved most was Dale Stephens, pretty mediocre for his first 2 season, but who really found his feet this season, I wouldn't have been at all bothered if he had left last summer...

    wilson and dervite have both improved greatly.I think dervite is our best centre back

    don't agree with that. having made his debut the previous season, Cousins completely stagnated last year, was no where near the first team squad, and wasn't even shining in the U21 games from what i've heard. Think he has come on amazingly this season.

    Similar with Poyet to a lesser extent, has been highly rated throughout but regardless of the fact i believe it was a contract situation that saw him not featuring earlier in the season, he's still taking to 1st team football i'm pretty sure much better than anyone would have expected and moved his game on significantly over the last few months.

    Not convinced Wilson has improved that much over this season, i think he was performing pretty consistently through the 2nd half of last season.

    Dervite has improved in the sense that he seems to have cut out the noticeable, individual errors that were occassionally blotting his copybook (silly penalties etc).

    Wilson was decent last season too. It's just that some fans enjoyed slating him because he was new. It wouldn't be Charlton if we didn't have a scapegoat.

    Wilson and Dervite did well enough last season. A long run of games in one position has just meant Wilson has shown what he can do.

    I saw Poyet and Cousins once each outside the first team last season (and Poyet again in pre-season). Always saw Cousins breaking through back to when I saw him play for England u16s on TV. Started to doubt it would happen for him, looked tidy in the Tonbridge game last season but it wasn't a performance that said he could really impress for the first team.

    Poyet looked like someone that would come through in time but probably a season earlier than I'd have expected, again tidy without standing any area of his game that really stood out. He now looks our most composed player and one that could handle the step up to play with and against better players.

    Everything I had read seemed to back that up, those regularly watching the u18s were saying Poyet was ok but not a great prospect. Can't remember what was being said about Cousins, but I don't think anyone was suggesting he should be in the first team until this season.

    Very true. Stephens was at his best with Cousins alongside him and we were finally seeing the best of him. It gets lost with all the Yann talk, but don't underestimate the loss of Stephens either. We wouldn't be struggling to create chances if he were still around. He could also grab one or two himself as well.
