Chris Hughton

  • Bad call, particularly with no real replacement in mind

  • Not an easy decision, but their run in means they needs at least a draw and probably a win at Fulham. If a new manager gives them a bit of a lift and produces a team more likely to win against Fulham and as a consequence keep them in the division, then when you consider the cost of relegation, the decision to sack Hughton may make sense.

Poor player acquisitions for this season has put Norwich where they are, and as manager Hughton must take the blame. When given a team of players at Newcastle, Birmingham and Norwich, Hughton has seemed a capable coach and perhaps this is where his talents are. May be a better long term fit at a club like WBA or, if Riga is not retained post May, Charlton.
  • Id love Chris Hughton at the valley. Nice fella plus a bloomin good manager....Look at his record its actually very good.
  • Bad decision .. perhaps Delia has been at the sherry again .. OK if they had a 'top' name lined up as a replacement but the youth team coach ? .. shades of Mick McCarthy at Wolves, totally ridiculous
  • Interesting times at Norwich City. Last season their final league position did not reflect their true form. They were in danger of relegation till the last couple games. The supporters were calling for Houghtons head last year. Mark Robson ( former Charlton coach) joined recently and missed the sacking. Neil Adams is highly regarded as his youth team lifted the youth cup last year. Incidentally Neil Adams played in the same Norwich team as Andy Hughes. We moan about Simon Church and his lack of goals - but he compares well with Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, who Norwich paid several millions for and is dire. I've been given a freebe for Norwich City's home games against Liverpool and Arsenal, could be interesting.
  • I know a couple of well reasoned, intelligent (yes there are some) Norwich fans who wanted him out. Picks the wrong players, bad defensive tactics etc. I don't believe they think they should be doing much better than they are they just dont rate him. They should have sacked him months ago though its a stupid time to do it now.
  • I know thye Norwich wanted him to go but with 5 games left with the transfer window shut when you have Liverpool, Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal as your last 4 games you wander what difference any manager will make.
  • Short memories those Norwich lot...
  • Nice honest fella Hughton, and a more than decent manager. If we are looking I would be happy to welcome him, his teams play with a lot of spirit.
  • norwich fans seem to be united in thinking this was a good decision... there really must be something in the water out there!

  • Seems strange but if it was going to happen surely it should have been months ago, very odd timing IMO.
  • Senior player said the team had lost confidence in his tactic's. To much criticism from him focusing on them not making mistakes, negative playing to avoid defeat.
I suppose they felt they (the board) that relegation would have been almost certain under Houghton - so a change may prove to be of some benefit. Time will tell.

I think you are wrong, i heard he pinched her baps!

  • Must have someone lined up.

Oh, believe me their Chief Exec will have someone lined up. Wouldn't trust that guy an inch.
Is their chief executive the same pratt that wanted to prosecute a 16 year old kid who a couple of years ago discovered the correct new design of their new kit 24 hrs before the official release and posted the details on the net ?
  • Just 4 years ago, they were with us in league 1. Despite 2 successive promotions, they are a small fish in a big pond. Clubs like Norwich are always going to be dipping their toe into the premier every now and then, before dropping back down to the championship. Fans however, have very short memories. Like us, when we had a great 7 year run in the top flight, a new breed of fan brought delusion (calling for Curbs to go as we needed to push on into europe).

The more level-headed of us (who had been around during darker days) knew it would end in relegation at some point, as it does for all clubs our size. I don't see much difference between ourselves and Norwich in club size.

Bottom line is: Far too much unrealistic expectation in football these days........................

But why should you have to put up with a manager who doesn't know his best team and plays for 0-0s? There was a stat up until recently that not one substitute had got a goal or an assist all season. I think that's now changed to one. He also spent 25m in the summer including £9m in Ricky Van Wolfswinkle so I'm not sure being little Norwich who were in League one 4 years ago is a good excuse either. He deserved the sack and I hope he doesn't end up anywhere near Charlton except maybe Palace or Millwall.

Absolutely correct tango. I've watched Norwich many times during the last forty years in between visits to Charlton and their are many similarities between the two. Most sensible supporters of clubs our size start a season in the prem. with the expectation of a relegation scrap. My neighbour a season ticket holder said recently how matches at Carrow road were full of tension- just hoping they do not lose. Although he did not want to see his team relegated, if it happened at least he would see his team win.

  • Having lost the last 7 away games on the bounce was the nail in Hughton's coffin; along with negative tactics and a lack of motivational skills it seems.

Living up here, the majority of fans have wanted him out for a while, although there are also some who would rather get relegated in order to see exciting football again and more victory's.

As far as club size in comparison to Charlton (as mentioned earlier). I think Norwich are potentially a bigger club purely by virtue of their fan base and catchment area. Also, when they were in League One and certainly the Championship they were pretty much selling out Carrow Road, week in week out. If they do manage to get established in the Premiership they will expand the ground by about 3000-5000 and still sell it out.

Great place to live by the way and not quite as 'yocal' as some would seemingly assume!

Agree Baz. with all but your claim that Norwich has a larger catchment area than Charlton - the area around Charlton has a greater population than the Norwich City and county area.

I really like Norwich as a place and have visited quite a few times. Norfolk is one of the better parts of England.........

Fair point about the population John. I think I was basing it on the fact that Norwich still pretty much managed to sell out Carrow Road, even in League One.

Actually Baz if you look at Norwich City's attendance by percentage of population in Norfolk, they are better supported than most football clubs. I once saw a report that claimed that the best supported clubs by percentage of the surrounding population are the Sottish league sides.
I'm sometimes quite envious of the huge support in the city. My 89 year old mother in law will always listen to the match commentary on Radio Norfolk if she is unable to go to Carrow road.

A piece of trivia - Harry Cripps - Millwall footballer at once assistant manager at Charlton was born in Dereham.
