For all the talk about tactics, games in hand, how bad Barnsley were (and they were for sure) the reality is unless we suddenly start scoring goals we can play as sweetly as you like, we're doomed. We have 31 goals in 41 matches - only Cardiff with 30 have fewer in all four leagues - and our goal difference, which was probably worth an extra point come the end of the season, is no longer an advantage.
Looking at last night, can anyone see where those vital goals are coming from, because I can't.
A few people on here are defending Harriott's performance based on the fact he was played on the wrong wing. I'm sorry, but this cannot be allowed to stand. Harriott's problem wasn't that he was a left footed player being asked to do a right footer's job, it's that he was failing to meet the most basic requirements of his job. Solly played the ball up the line, Callum let it dribble out for a throw. Cousins played the ball across the midfield, Callum let it dribble out of play. A great cross came in for Callum to put away (or at least get on target) a totally free header, Callum glances it off the pitch. Callum gets the chance to play a simple ball, knocks it to their left back, who the Barnsley fan I was with said is a total liability. Harriott's performance was one of the worst I've seen, and I hate digging out our players, but amongst the breathtaking incompetence of that match, his inability to perform basic motor functions was astonishing.
Agreed, his touch and decision making was hopeless, so many casual showboating flicks to nowhere, he was a massive weak link in the first half. It was shame that the 2 headed opportunities in the 1st half didn't fall to JJ or DD as we would probably have taken the lead.
We all know that one of our best performances of the season was the home game against Brighton when Lawrie Wilson played in front of Chris Solly, but does Jose Riga? I can't believe he hasn't been told that. I think if that combination had been available for most of the season we would not be in our current position, regardless of everything else.
Was it available to Riga last night? It appears so, but I am willing to be told otherwise. If it was, why didn't he utilise it, even for 45 minutes? We may have been out of sight by half-time. One of the problems of changing the manager is that he has wanted to take a fresh look at options that should already have been discounted, eg Danny Green; or Bradley Pritchard on the right of midfield. Whatever else has happened, we have wasted valuable time and points learning things we should already know - and which Chris Powell appears to have worked out very quickly in relation to Marvin Sordell.
I poopooed the relegation saves £4M for Roly conspiracy theorists a few weeks back because by any rational measure the numbers don't work. But Riga's recent persistense with the hopeless calamity and the shameless sodall, added to his incessant tinkering with the back four, which had been our least bad aspect, it seems that the fix is in, relegation must indeed be the plan. On the evidence of the last couple of games more of the players have got the message too. At least my season ticket is £100 cheaper next season than this, shame I've already paid, double shame I'll be watching 3rd division football in a ground 2 thirds empty. Happy easter everybody
Red Chaser Did you see Pigott at Leeds one of the 198 like I was? He was hooked off on 52 mins and was lucky to be given 7 minutes at the start of the 2nd period. So it's a no from me when taking into account his other performances this season in the league. This isn't U21 football and he is not ready to cope with the physical very street wise centre halves in the Championship, just my opinion
I accept your opinion of course, but would you please tell me who you prefer to Joe on Friday, and why ?
Powell wanted sordell the season before we got him pa so he was powellys man now whether he was his first choice I don't know
Regardless of yanns decision not to play pa against donny he was still not 100% committed to staying until Powell had his contract agreed that was well documented
At that point I said I found that uncomfortable
I think people are doing far to much study into RD tbf and looking at his every Wimm and personality trait
How many done that with previous owners including Murray as I am sure we would've soon discoverd he had the ability to seriously fuck things up with ridiculous ego decisions like dowie
The fault of losing yann still remains with the lies he was told by TJ and MS no one else as he would've been signed long before

For a big lad, I havent seen Piggot win one header against a defender yet. I'm sure he will improve, but he is not the answer yet at the very least.
We were a lot better than Barnsley last night, but if you can't take your chances you always put pressure on yourself defensively. I just knew they were going to score from that corner, because I couldn't see them scoring in any other way and we are Charlton after all. Of course I didn't forsse the wicked sliced cross effort but the point stands.
It is too difficult for us to score - but if the ball runs we will still get the odd goal and how we do on Friday and in the upcoming games will depend on whether we are fortunate enough to get th efirst goal. Not over yet by a long way.

@Granpa Along with others in the players marks and post match views threads I didn't think that Sordell and Obika played that badly, the effort was there but sadly the end product wasn't. They are the best of a bad bunch IMO, Church has had his chance and Pigott is just not ready. They are all poor so why play more than one of them especially one with very little experience at this level. Obika is the stronger hold up player with a bit of pace of the lot and does win a header, it's Hobson's choice though I'm afraid. Maybe play Obika up front, NOT on the left, with Reza just behind in a 4-4-1-1 or go 4-5-1 as follows given no other injuries apart from Wiggins.
Hamer Solly Moro Dervite Fox Wilson Cousins Poyet Astrit JJ Obika
Loanees seem to be a big part of the problem - no or little hunger. Obika and Sordell atrocious. Harriot's performance I am putting down to nerves/fear. I drove down from Ipswich looking forward to the lads putting up a right battle - I drove back to Ipswich feeling really, really let down. Was surprised at the starting line-up, how long it took to make subs with clearly better players on the bench and agree that Morro would likely have covered M'Voto's run for goal 1. Positives, I thought Richard Wood had a decent game and great to see Chris Solly back. An abject performance against a team ripe for the taking. Had already ordered season tickets for next year - it can't get any worse than last night, for sure!
I don't really have anything to add that hasn't been said already. Some people have said Barnsley did a workmanlike job, but they were there for the taking. We just don't have any takers where it matters. I think the same could be said of Reading at home. I thought the first half against them, we more than matched them, but they kick on and have players that can finish. With regards Harriott, I think he showed a lot of promise when he broke onto the scene at the end of last season. I don't know what has happened??? You could see his confidence was gone by the 30 minute mark last night, some really basic errors started creeping in. Elsewhere, we are now left with the situation of having exhausted our striking options in an attempt to find something that works. Can we say maybe Reza up top with Obika, or is that just clutching at straws?
The most frustrating thing about last night was again, conceding a set piece. Time and time again this season we buckle in this situation. We have a relatively solid back line in open play. Swing a corner in, all hell breaks loose. We controlled the midfield through some good play by Cousins & Poyet, but that final ball/shot whatever it is, is lacking. Someone earlier posted he would get shot down for pulling up Jackson, but his performances are becoming somewhat poor and frustrating again. For me, he should only be in the team if he's consistently doing damage from the set pieces. Aside from the corner against Yeovil last week, it's not happening. I don't think people realise how much ground Poyet & Cousins have to cover with him along side them. I get he's our captain, role model to learn from etc, however, Hughes is just as vocal and encouraging from the bench, and I think Morro could do as good a job. He did come close with that shot in the first half, but unless he scores, I see him as hole in the middle. There were at least 2 times he was late in the tackle in the opening 20 mins last night, he gets bypassed very easily. Of course he has good set pieces, but if we're going to rotate, surely he is one of the prime candidates given his legs.
I know Harriott was a lot worse, but let us not pin all the blame on him. I also feel we have a huge problem on both wings. We have had numerous central midfielders on the right this season, more recently it has been left footers in Harriott and Reza. We're basically saying our width comes from the full backs. That is a lot of pressure on each of them to do both jobs.
My fears now are no Wiggins. I know he has had not the best of seasons, but he's a very good player. Without him, I don't know what we've got down the left. The right hand side is even worse, because we don't seem to have natural balance. Ideally, you'd have Solly RB, Wilson RW. But can we get Solly fit for the run in. Finally, it's now how we deal with the pressure. It is still in our hands, but now we have to win going into each round of games as we only have one game in hand left. Also, we would have played the same number of games as Millwall come Friday night.
Testing times. I haven't given up hope because I think this division isn't the sort you can say home or away win. We all know our inefficiencies. We just have to hope there is enough in there, and other teams screw up. I would say 3 wins out of 5 we're definitely safe. For some reason, I see us getting 2 wins, a draw and 2 defeats, which I believe would need us relying on other results.
I am right behind them now though and refuse to vent or criticise at the end of the game. The team needs us like we did last night, getting behind them as they went in for half time, and for those that stayed back to clap at the end. I thought the north stand was excellent in their support throughout, can we have a repeat on Friday please.....
Probably a good thing that I haven't been able to get into the site before now. Just a completely gutless and clueless performance last night from back to front.
Ben - the 6 yard box is yours mate...command it and take that freakin' ball or at least make a bloody big nuisance of yourself going for it. Don't stay rooted to your line where you have half your defence standing already. As for the second, I have looked several times and still can't work out if that was an invisible chair you appeared to be sitting on at the near post, or if you were practising the moves from that Snoop Dogg car insurance ad!
Callum - just read garymanilow's post. I can't add to that. Summed up his non-performance perfectly. Total lack of confidence and he's not going to get that back in a side like this at the moment. That makes him a liability and he shouldn't be exposed to it here.
Marvin - I actually thought at the start of the season that a move back south would suit you and we'd see the player raved about by Watford. I was confident enough to have a cheeky little bet on you as top goal-scorer for the division!!
I should probably just stop after that comment as it shows how bloody little I know about football. Although it probably also qualifies me to be manager as well.
The good news is that I haven't renewed my ticket for next year.
The bad news is that I still have a year left on the 5 year ticket!
Even worse...I could have got them cheaper year by year!!. The word MUG just gets bigger on my forehead every day!
I think the problem is that Harriot was given more slack last season – as any player who has just broken into the team will get. So he wasn’t afraid to try to beat opponents and this gave them something to think about – whether he beat them or not, because they knew he would keep trying to with tricks and fast feet.
Now, his performances are judged more critically, he has shown a psychological issue, in that he is too afraid of the collective groan. This means that he has changed his game and if given the chance to lay off he always will - I cal lit cop out football. But that isn’t his strength or why he is in the team so the way he is playing now is a liability to the side. When you are playing against a deep defence, you really need a player who can beat his man and we are lacking this. Harriot has the attributes, but is not in a state to deliver them.
The miss yesterday was a technical flaw. And technique is what goes when you play with fear. Those who saw him play in the youth team and indeed last season will know that there is a player in there, but how do we get him out again. The only way I can see is a loan and hope that he grows some, as he is a talented lad and he is letting himself down.

this....all day long!, Harriott in my opinion is NOT a naturally gifted footballer, he's a fast runner who can play a bit....there's a big difference and I've played with many

Morrison and Wiggins are two of our best quality players, Wiggins injury is a huge blow and he is one of our only players on a contract. Morrison has been quality all season, 'rested (?)' against Barnsley yday and we concede two sloppy goals . Doesn't sound something you can stick a positive spin on? And not sure what it's got to do with Hamer?

The Hamer thing was unrelated.
Not trying to put on a positive spin, but all this doom and gloom/resignation to failure when we're not even in the relegation zone yet annoys me.
Do we know for sure that Morrison wasn't injured? (I know he was on the bench but that might be because there was no-one else).
Sadly, too many players are going off form now. Hamer, who was brilliant after being brought in for Thuram, has made significant errors in the last three matches. Last night's was a weird one. It looked as if the cross was curving outwards and Hamer thought it was going out of play. I can't work out whether he was stood too close to his near post or not.
Dervite was excellent in Riga's first few matches but he's making a few errors now too. He headed the ball too wide of Hamer for the throw that lead to the freak goal.
The strikers were actually ok last night with their back to goal. Both Sordell and Obika held the ball up well at times and played others in but the problems came when they faced goal. Their lack of confidence is all too plain.
Wilson is obviously pretty badly injured/knackered but will now have to be thrown in whatever happens. Solly tried hard but posed no attacking threat at all (perfectly understandable after such a long lay-off and he's probably still carrying the injury).
Ok...the team for Friday....assuming Morrison is fit and everyone bar Wiggins is available....
Hamer (just)
Wilson Morrison Dervite Solly (LB)
Adjarevic (RM) Poyet Cousins Jackson
Sordell Reza (on the basis that he does at least possess SOME goal threat. He's hit the post four times now since joining)
Easier said than done but it's time for the players to forget about the league table and just go out and play football.
Playing Solly at left back isn't a bad idea but we need him and Wilson on the right now more than ever. I wouldn't play Jackson there either. Lennon / Fox maybe.
After a long and boring coach ride home to the Kent coast, have decided to post comments on last night's crap game. First a terrible team selection, no Morrison or Wilson. If if both not 100% fit better than their replacements. Why ruin a kid's confidence by playing him on the wrong wing? Obika and Sordell falling all over the place, so why water the pitch beforehand? Sordell intimidated by the Barnsley giant (22). Even let him catch him up when through on goal! Would rather have kept Yann and Stephens and let them go for nothing at the end of the season. THEY WOULD HAVE KEPT US UP. Stephens had critics, but at least he could shoot and tackle! His replacement AA has played just 2 90 minute games. Rest of Leige loanees and signings utter useless. Takeover has got us relegated. Rant over!
Perhaps I'm being harsh, but I was watching AA, Morrison and Wilson practising at half-time, and they could not have looked less interested if they tried. They were literally just pissing about, having a laugh and seemed bored. No structure, nothing.
Compare this to the Barnsley subs down the other end who looked like they were actually practicing some kind of system.
One big difference Iv read on here twitter and Facebook , when we lost under Powell it was never he's fault it was the teams , lose under Riga and people want him gone saying he's tactically useless ect , he's dealing with a team playing twice a week every week he has to make changes , but regardless it's all he's fault but was never powells and unfortunately he'll never be accepted every time we lose a game ( fickle ).
You're clearly reading things as you want to. Either that or your rose tinteds are also blinkered. There were many people saying Powell was at fault and many saying the squad wasn't good enough, including me. Now some are saying Riga's crap but many of us are still saying the squad isn't good enough.

Only at the end did Powell ever get criticised ,only ever see it on into the valley ! Fact

Agree they looked to be going through the motions. They still played some of our best football during the break!
I doubt Solly will play Friday. Hence why Lawrie was on bench. He may do, depends on his knee reaction, but I'd be surprised. LB is a toss up between Fox, Lennon or Evina...
I'm scratching for positives but at least the pitch looked/played a bit better. Grass is actually starting to grow on the bald patch by the East Stand.
It's just got a lot tougher to stay in this league. 5 minutes extra at the end? 5 hours wouldn't have been enough. It just wasn't our night - we dominated but we didn't score - you are always going to be in trouble when that happens because the opposition can catch you on the break or fluke a cross into the back of the net.
One thing I noticed was they were quick on the break and we never were.
Er we did score in extra time. If that flukey second goal hasn't gone in, we'd have come out with a 1-1 all draw and massively dented Barnsley's chances of staying up.
As people have said, the table doesn't lie, and it shows we're 4th from bottom. with Barnsley 2nd from bottom. Yeovil I think are down now, but everyone else has a chance of staying up, it'll come down to a horrendous mistake or piece of magic somewhere/
Sorry, what I meant was during the periods where we dominated, we didn't score - the first 20 minutes for example.

It was shame that the 2 headed opportunities in the 1st half didn't fall to JJ or DD as we would probably have taken the lead.
The home side were dominant but struggled in front of goal again before Astrit Ajdarevic's stoppage-time consolation goal.
Jordan Cousins, Johnnie Jackson and Callum Harriott all wasted early chances for Jose Riga's side before Barnsley scored with their first chance.
Diego Poyet fired wide after the break.

I fear we are heading downhill fast.
Hamer needs to take a lot of stick for that second goal, he ducked out of the way of the ball FFS.
Not trying to put on a positive spin, but all this doom and gloom/resignation to failure when we're not even in the relegation zone yet annoys me.
have decided to post comments on last night's crap game.
First a terrible team selection, no Morrison or Wilson.
If if both not 100% fit better than their replacements.
Why ruin a kid's confidence by playing him on the wrong wing?
Obika and Sordell falling all over the place, so why water
the pitch beforehand?
Sordell intimidated by the Barnsley giant (22).
Even let him catch him up when through on goal!
Would rather have kept Yann and Stephens and let them go
for nothing at the end of the season. THEY WOULD
HAVE KEPT US UP. Stephens had critics, but at least he
could shoot and tackle! His replacement AA has played just 2 90 minute games.
Rest of Leige loanees and signings utter useless. Takeover has got us relegated.
Rant over!
Compare this to the Barnsley subs down the other end who looked like they were actually practicing some kind of system.
