Depends what they want, if they are after a 'traditional' British pub (whatever that means) then the Monkey Puzzle around the corner in Southwick Street (off Praed Street) is not bad, though it's been a few years since I've been there. If they want chain type pubs with a huge selection of lagers and loud office parties then anything along Paddington Basin will suffice. All within walking distance.
For a historic interior try the Victoria, in Strathearn Place, five minutes' walk from Paddington station towards Bayswater. The carved mahogany fittings and gilded mirrors with intricate coloured decoration date from 1864. It's a small corner site with a congenial atmosphere and Fuller's excellent beers - your American friends should be impressed.

Absolutely this. Haven't been for a while (don't work in London anymore) but there's also a little Italian and an Indian restaurant right across the road. Grab a table outside if you're there early. Great relaxed atmosphere and very good beer.
